With the substantial improvement in search technology, coupled with a growing sophistication (http://www.searchlores.org/tips.htm) in the users abilities to craft search queries, expectations have risen. The study points to the vast majority of participants expecting relevant returns on the first page, and no deeper than the third page.

thats how it should be, most relevent are the first listed.

Think if there were no search engines though.
the only websites you could ever find would have to be cataloged. you know how many people would host public sites that would never have a single view simply because no one knows it exists.
