I'm lookin to upgrade from my x800 pro vivo (but can't be unlocked :( )

I've pretty much narrowed it down to 2 video cards.

1) the saphire x800 gto2 which i would use a new HSF to achieve higher overclocks and the 16 pipelines (can i flash the bios to that of the x850 xt pe?), cost 158; 6000+ 3dmark05 scores; don't know what this card gets in fear

or

2) the 7900 gt, nuf said, cost 330; 8000+ 3dmark05 scores; everything maxed in fear at 1280x960 with 2x/16x with 56+ fps

But there are huge differences between the cards, the biggest one would be the price. 158 for the x800 gto2 or 330 for the 7900 gt.

with all of this in mind, If the performance increase from the x800 gto2 to the 7900 gt isn't much larger than a few settings such as aa in games like fear and half life 2, then i would be much happier spending the less money and getting the x800 gto2

Whats your take on all of this?

Depends on your price range. Considering how cheap these things are now, get yourself an X850XT if you're thinking about that X800GTO2. 7900GT will obviously be alot better, HOWEVER its over $300. If you're looking for low-priced value, X850XT, X1600XT with manual overclock, or X1800GTO should do fine. But if you're willing to blow some cash, that 7900GT has amazing value.

Personally I'd go with the 7900 to get a current gen card and get pixel shader 3 support. Also it will keep up with new games longer than the gto would.
