I've been playing Oblivion since I got my X850 Pro about a month ago, and I haven't had any problems. However, I just enabled anti-aliasing, and now I'm getting strange artifacts in the water (visible in the video here (http://70.85.41.36/~gconga/oblivion/oblivion.avi)), and the left and top parts of the screen flicker brightly. I do not have anything overclocked, and it only happens when AA is enabled. Does this sound like a hardware defect?

it does look like a hardware defect or overclcock artifact.. check the card temps.. defect if its at default artifact if its clocked.. he he he..

That's what I was afraid of...it is at normal clockspeeds. However, why would it only do it with AA enabled? If the card were faulty, wouldn't non-AA also be bugged?
EDIT: Yes, I've tried AA with other programs and 3dMark03 with no problems.

Might be a memory problem, or it may just be Oblivion. There are numerous reports of problems when trying to go all out with this game.

I just tried my old Radeon 9800 Pro with 2xAA enabled, and the exact same thing happens, so at least I now know it's not the video card. I'd still like to fix this problem though -- what could be causing this? Would it be worth it to try downgrading to older drivers?

Is the AA setting in game? I do know that this game is graphics intensive, and AA actually samples all graphics at which ever level you choose, 2 times in this case. Using AA makes for higher quality graphics, but it will consume resources.
If you read the known issues with whatever driver you are using at ATI, it will explain what games or programs have issues with their drivers. Your best bet may be to either try previous drivers to see if the problem clears up, or just don't use AA. The game is so pretty without AA!

I've tried both enabling AA in the game and with ATI Catalyst, both which produce the same result. I've just installed 6.3 drivers after doing a Driver Cleaner, but I'm still having the same problems. I'm about to just give up and wait for Catalyst 6.5....
Also, I found one other post on PlanetAMD64.com describing the exact same problem I have, but that's the only other instance I've been able to find. Perhaps it's x64 related...?

Remember one thing, moving water is a complex set of patterns to draw along with reflections and whatnot. I have seen some games run flawlessly with AA enabled, but as soon as you get near water it slows down.
My bro has this game, but is running with a 9600. Will see if he has experianced this problem as well. He isn't running with a 64-bit, but he does run AMD CPU's. Usually he doesn't run AA, just everything else maxed out.

All right, thanks for looking into it. The problems aren't only around water, however. No matter where I am, there is this flickering light along the top and left edges of the screen along with other minor glitches. Water is just the most noticeable.

go back to some older drivers.. new drivers fix new cards.. an older card will be better with older drivers.. and use the old control panel if u can find it..

I just tried Oblivion on my Windows XP 32-bit partition (fortunately, the game ran straight from the x64 installation). As somewhat expected, the game works fine in Windows XP 32-bit with AA enabled. The only problem is a single pixel line along the top and left sides of the screen, which is negligible in comparison the the problems I'm having on x64 edition. Can anyone running Windows x64, an ATI card, and Oblivion try running it with AA enabled to see if you get the same problems?

I'm having a thin layer of line like you at the top and left sides. I'm running X1600 Pro though. The lines only appear at 1024X768. But when i changed it to 1280X1024, these lines disappeared. But it eats up 10FPS =( I have AA maxed out in a 32bit Windows. all maxed except self-shadow and grass. Using omega drivers and ATI tool to overclock. And about that flickering thing i'm having too seems to be my own GPU problem...
