why so slow?

ok so i finally upgraded to a wireless g router, and my speed still sucks. why?!?
the router is a 2wire 1000hg 802.11b/g. i have a Realtek RTL8185 with driver version 5.102.504.2005 . everything is updated and stuff, and it is still damn slow. why did the speed not change???

make sure the router has g enabled. some come with only b running. also put your lappy/desktop near the router to make sure it isnt distance that is slowing down the connection

The 802.11g standard is still only 54Mbps. Most wired networks are 100Mbps, so if you're used to a wired network you won't get the same transfer rate.

That 54 speed is the MAX performance... I wouldn't expect to get it that fast 100% of the time.

54/8= 6.75Mbyte, remove between 10-15% for protocol overhead, around 5.7-5.9Mbyte per second, then you have to start fitting in distance, obstacles, walls, inwall cabling and tubing, antenas for other devices, other nearby wireless networks, cordless phones,

All my Belkin wireless equipment seems to communicate fairly quickly. One thing to keep in mind is if you are copying a file from one wireless computer to another, if your router has only one antenna that antenna must both transmit and receive data at the same time so transfers much slower. That's the benefit of Belkin's design using two antennas on their routers.

Wifi signal at around 50%, about 20 feet away from router, through walls and down a floor. Oh yeah and it actually is great for gaming, I run UT2004 demo off my network :D.

My wireless is about 15 feet away from the router and going through one wall. My PCI card has an external antenna positioned on top of my PC and the Ralink utility reports the signal at 100%. I'm very pleased with Belkin's hardware, just a shame their own drivers caused me BSOD. :eek:
