im new to oc'ing and after reading the documentation for ati tool i am still confused about what needs to be done first. the quick start guide says scan for artifacts in step 2 and then says step 3 and 4 are finding max core and memory, respectively. but at the bottom in the revised quick start guide it makes no mention of scanning for artifacts.
can i safely follow the simple instructions in the revised quick start guide or is that missing important information??
if anyone can link me to the step by step instuctions for ocing my x 850 xt or tell me that the revised quick start guide will suffice that would be sweet.

trial and error is what any true overclocker goes through... My first card that I overclocked was extremely easy due to software level voltage regulation. On your card, however, if you want to get to higher speeds you'll need a physical volt moddification to the card. If this is your first time, I'd recommend not doing that.

To get the most out of your card without volt mod, simply slide your clocks up about 5mhz at a time, then click scan for artifacts. If you find nothing in 10 minutes, more then likely your fine. ATITool will attempt to find your max by raising the clocks rather aggressively until artifacts are noticeable immediately after the clocks are raised, then it will attempt to back off alittle.

Thats all there is to it. Make sure you understand what the temperatures are like inside the case, adjust the fan accordingly, or get an aftermarket VGA cooler... A VF1-Plus would cool your card the best.

is there a reason i shouldnt use the find max core and find max mem buttons rather then adjusting the mhz manually... don't the find max core/mem buttons search for artifacts?

u can go http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/voltmods there and pick ur card to volt mod... and also... without it, u can go pretty far on a overclock depending on ur card
