Me and my brother are connected through the same router but we cant seem to join the same game in any kind of multiplayer. As in im trying to join his game or hes trying to join mine and im speaking of internet games. Whether it be halo or battlefield 2 we get a network connection error or invalid ip or something along those lines.
I believe the problem to be that we are both using the same dedicated ip and just using different ports in the router. The router model is a linksys etherfast cable/dsl router. Would this statement be true and how would I go about fixing it so we could both play on the same server?

you cant, basicly
the thing is that theres a limited ammount of IP addresses, so what they have done is device them in to public and private addresses, so inside local networks, every computer has its own private address inside the local network, now, what the router/gateway does is interconnect 2 or more networks, and keeps a record of all connections to know what connection goes to what private IP address, but for the external world, its all coming from the same "computer", so it sees the same computer trying to establish 2 connections to the same server with 2 different clients, and dosnt allow it,
you could try to proxy one of them to make the server think the connection is comming from another IP, but then, except to add between 200-800ms to your lag,
then if you actually do manage to trick the server in to letting both connect, i doubt you and your brother bought a copy each, server see 2 clients with same key, kicks you out for duplicate key, and eventualy, will ban the key from the game, that means your going to have to buy another one to be able to play online again

Or better yet, set up port forwarding and start your own multiplayer games :D. I know nothing about Linksys routers, so you're better off looking in the help section of your router lol. Halo uses port 2302 (I think), and I don't play BF2.
