the k6 is better than the p3... u no it would be good if u will overclock because its possible to make 1ghz with the p3 but if u dont wanna... the k6 is a good go, it lasts forever, i still have my k6 ibm from 20 yrs ago

The reason being, is that I owned one like it in the AMD K6-III @450mhz (great chip).
I ran it on an ASUS "Super-7" motherboard, was stable as stainless steel!
(I liked it because it had a unique cache layout & design (L1/L2/L3 (the last on mobo)))!
:)
* Good stuff, & if the 500 is anything like it? It's a great lil' older CPU...

I have a K6-II @ 450(ish)mHz, on OLD laptop, and it is oced, (with a nice new weird cooling system) to 560mHz.

The P3 is the basis of the Core2 architechture, and should be the better overclocker and have a higher IPC...
K7 is actually the P3 rival, K6 is too wide since you get K6-2 and K6-3 in the bunch and are not reaélly good rivals for a P3. And even so, which P3? There are many models of P3 and the last P3 produced were quite powerful.

There is more than one P3 at 500mhz?

I've a system from a dump with a P3 800MHz fpr skt. 370 and one 333MHz for slot 1
i was asking at 500mhz, i don't know the socket, but it's like the cpu is in a slot

Thats a slot 1 p3, the earlier were p2's

In a fight between a k6 500 and a p3 the p3 would beat the k6 and abuse it like it was its prison bitch. however k7 would indeed be the fair comp for p3 but in reality its never been about Amd Vs Intel both are great in their own way. Intel users tend to be smarter than Amd users. and thats where all this aggresion comes from sooner you Amd users figure this out the better :slap:

* Ah, that almost makes me want to put it into my signature...

I use both CPU families here though & you're right, both have merits in various operations over the other...

P.S.=> Funny stuff... but, on the init. subject of this thread? I can't recall from those days (around/iirc, 1997-1999 would be the timeframe for those CPU's being compared) which is faster, but the Pentium II @ 500mhz MIGHT BE FASTER than this AMD K6 500...
I only ran one LIKE the AMD noted in this comparison (AMD K6-III @450mhz), & loved how it was "laid out" L1/L2/L3 cache-wise, much like Pentium Pros were in that regard... apk

It's the other way around... Hence the annoying know-nothing question that every wannabee geeky type asks - "What Pentium is it?"

I have a cpu of each here if you look at the size of the p2 500 it should be and was faster
but not by much. in those happier time I ran an amd 500 on one pc and an overclocked celeron 300 a on another 476 mhz the celron was faster what was holding the amd back was the socket7 mother boards the celeron was flying on an intel bx chipset. and so was the p2 500's at the time. Amd came to life when they and a few others came up with some chipsets that kicked butt. but the coolness of the 300-500 k6 was the imfamus stealing of MMX from intel. Intel screwed up thier patent that mistake my friends simply gave Amd a kick start and made them what they are today so you am2 4800 x2 user's you owe a debt of graditude to Intel :D

All kiding aside I have a 3400+ Amd laptop and a few Intel PC's their all fast and steady
so it goes both ways I just like to kick up some dust from time to time
you owe a debt of graditude to Intel :D
Thanks INTEL

p3 hands down k6's were about as slow as they came, my 500MHZ k6 can't compete with a 300MHZ p2 much less a 500p3 lol.
