Wiz,
I don't know if you caught my points in the last post/thread about this & you may be WELL aware of 'em (always a 'danger' here, in "preaching-to-the-choir" & all that)?
BUT, do watch out for anybody re-enlisting or enlisting for the first time rather, using Yahoo.com emails!
(NO IP HEADER AVAILABLE to help you determine "what's-what" & where they are from)
... & I would ban the list of proxies available out there too (you know what I mean here imo/I think), because combined? They will get folks by bans, unless you watch for those things in combination.
:)
APK
P.S.=> I feel it's too bad, but the guy did "slip up" a lot & argue it out when he may (probably) have been wrong @ points... he needs to work on 'conceding points' here & there imo, but he did try as well! Oh well - time to go DSL now, & ditch out on Cable!
See you on a new connection shortly hopefully today guys... apk

Look, anyone who persistantly and repetitiously tells a n00b to raise their vcore to 1.6, despite warnings from several knowledgable people isn't helping anyone. This guy he was talking to was new to OCing and didn't even know that you can control FSB from BIOS. He was going to destroy that guys computer... and the sad part is the guy bought into it hook, line and sinking because it was an "easy" way to OC. He finally decided against it to our great relief and then RPG starts calling us all kinds of names and crap.... i'm guessing they already deleted that thread though.
EDIT: you don't understand, they were pleading with this guy not to listen to RPG... now imagine if they hadn't been there... I can only imagine that's the kind of stuff W1zzard is refering to when he said "i had to worry about what he did every day."

Yeah, just rub it with sandpaper, that'll solve your artifact problem  (I'm sure Infrared would appreciate this one especially, as far as the actually amount of work that goes into properly lapping a heatsink)

Poor RPG,
It reminds me of what I must have been like when I was younger. I remember my mom crying and saying "I cant buy anything without you taking it apart"
He seems like he is VERY young and just wants to fit in very bad. I hope he finds a place where he can use some of his ideas. 90% of what he said was junk but there were some parts that showed glimmers of hope.
I am glad I am not a boss here because it must take a lot of effort to keep checking up on the RPG's...

I think RPGs problem is that he has alot of info, but dosen't quite see how it all comes together. Lapping a heatsink is not a solution to an overheating problem with a VF-700, common knowledge states that it is a great heatsink, and if you have heat problems with it either A your PC case is a microwave, or B too much thermalpaste.
This kid is dangerous on any forum. I'm glad I posted before that guy took sandpaper to his heatsink.
But yeah I agree with Markleb he must be young, hopefully in time he will become more knowledgeable about PCs and be able to better give solutions to problems

What he said was true... kindof. Using high grit sandpaper will increase contact with the heatsink and the GPU. But he didnt say high grit... and thats only if your overclocking, else there is no real point with the vf700, its already a great cooler.

So sad, I noticed his system specs, and I wondered how he could claim to achieve such high overclocks for both his CPU and GPU, (was it 4.7 Ghz on an air cooled 3Ghz P4?)... :p
Anyway, this is one of the most helpful hardware forums around, and I'm glad it has stayed this way for along time :)

Wow as much useless and incorrect info on here how could you track down just one person?
point is if new people want to over clock they will ask how what works for some on one pc may not work for another on the same set up. a new person should have enough sense to read all the info and decide for them self what they want to do to their pc. myself I have wasted more than a few cpu's/motherboards doing things I have read on websites run by the best in the business. look at the spec's people post on here thats more than dangeruse for noobies to read. curently there are no 4.0 ghz processors on the markit yet many post theirs run that high from oc'ing face it that alone turns many a noobie into cannon fodder.

But all of them ppl with very high OC'd systems show proof of their achievements, either by posting compare URL, pictures or other ways...
Besides, you can use common sense to know when someone is lying, there's no way a 3Ghz P4 would reach 4.7Ghz on air cooling alone, that's more than 1.7Ghz of overclock, and a quad pumped FSB of 1253.33Mhz at a divider of 15 on an intel processor supposed to run at 800Mhz FSB!
Intel is just starting to migrate to 1066Mhz FSB, and won't introduce 1333Mhz FSB until 2007...
Steevo

With correct information you can achieve decent OC's very easily. But his specs were unbelieveable, not as they couldn't be done, just as it was him.
See INFRARED signature p4 at 4.9 on air, an even higher FSB

That's precisely why serious forums like this should refrain from letting who ppl lie about their actual knowledge (or lack of) about OCing to give advice to ppl who are new to OCing, don't you agree?
Btw, after OCing PCs since it first was mentioned on the 'net many years ago, I for one know that OCing is not for wimps, no need for you to remind it to me ;)
I recognize however, that no one cannot claim they know all about OCing, in fact, far from it, as some of us do it only for a hobbie, and forums like Techpowerup (and OCFAQ before it) offer invaluable information for ppl looking to get the most out of their systems :)

Yeah, just download CPU-Z http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/search.php?q=cpu-z and run it. Then click to the last tab in the program and click the link that says something like "Validation Website". After you register there it will take you to a webpage showing a "screenshot" of the main CPU-Z window with all your info. Take that URL and paste it your signature. If you want fancy, click on the little "globe-chain-link" icon thing and you can make the words in the link whatever you want them to be i.e. tc_terencec (http://www.google.com) will take you to Google.

* RPG is gone now, & that is all there is to say about that...
We don't need to call the guy names & such either guys, or post those photos & such (think about it, it only makes you look silly/poorly on that account, guys... imo @ least).
I don't know if you guys have ever been kicked from a forums, but it's not a nice feeling (I admittedly have & don't need to get into it... but, I never liked it happening either!)
I am sure the guy is not liking it, as is, let him be imo... mocking him ontop of his being banned is putting salt into the cut guys...
My impression of him was like those of others here: He DID try, too hard, & did make assumptions & such that were WAY off base, but he often got picked on in doing so (unneeded really, just correcting him would have been enough imo).
Anyhow... here we are!
APK
P.S.=> What I know is, "I am LIKING DSL" - it works, bit of a hassle setting it up & what-not (had to "lower my defenses" way WAY down to get it active & had to use IE specific pages, which again, had to do the same b.s., & now have it all reset again)...
Me = happy boy, paying less (by 67% no less) & getting same relative performance online!
(AND, all of my Tcp/IP hacks work for DSL now too (this is the proof) as they did w/ CableModem, and even dialup (w/ minor alterations here for packet sizes passing etc.))... apk

Bingo - my thoughts/feelings, exactly (and many others' here as well).
:)
* Just a young guy trying to "hang" is all & be part of the "in-crowd" but pushing a bit too hard & making mistakes (not accepting correction or possibilities that he MAY have been "off"/"wrong")...
I agree 110% with your assessment of the situation!
APK
P.S.=> Well, last I have to say here (provided nobody addresses me directly & such in reply)... off to enjoy DSL, and now get my Firewalling Router into the mixture here again... pain in the butt, but worth it (because saving money large using DSL vs. Cable)... apk

Maybe this is an AMD thing, but since your proc is double-pumped, shouldn't your bus speed be 400MHz, due to your 200MHz FSB (HTT)? For example, Pentiums being quad-pumped, my bus speed is 800MHz at 200MHz FSB, or, 1000MHz at 250 FSB.
EDIT: hrm... your voltage isn't showing up either... are you using version 1.35? it's no big deal, my voltage doesn't show up either and in 3DMark05 when my Bus speed should be 1000, it's still says 200... hehe, no programs perfect I guess :p

I didn't "know" him all that well either, & I am not familiar w/ all the "goings-on" here too (only been a member here for a bit is why, maybe 3 months, tops?).
Anyhow - I'm sure of 1 thing: I've been there myself, & you just move on to other areas (worst part is, you tend to "lose touch" w/ certain folks from forums you may have grown to like imo)...

Yep. That's always a good thing to remember. always be causious. No-one giving advice will get angry if you question their advice so it's good to be safe. The mods can only do so much, there will always be the occational post we miss that may contain bad advice.
If in doubt, check with someone you can trust. Perhaps by sending a PM to a mod asking for us to check the advice. :)

The whole idea of heat pipes (and all phase change cooling for that matter) is that it uses a gas. Heat pipe tech does use liquid.
At such a low pressure that the boiling point is at common run temps for CPU's. Then the pipes are rifled and the "steam" condensates and is drawn back down through the rifling thus moving heat.
Thus the need for correct orientation, and sealed pipes, in low pressure settings.

From what I've read the only reason you could say a heatpipe uses liquid is because the gas that is inside condenses into liquid, just like in a can of co2, etc. So yes it uses liquid, but those liquids are typically gases in open air when not under pressure.... hense why they evaporate so easy.

See my subject-line/title above, first, & read on:
(Not sure what I've "walked into" on this one, or who you were/are responding to here, but I will put in my 2 cents I guess, on catching someone in the act online)
Source routed packet sniffing?
That'd help, since it's actually originally intended for debugging routing problems, no doubt about it, & you carry that source thru ALL of your IP hops.
The main security problem is that several IP stacks will reverse a source route when responding to a source routed packet.
This means that it would be relatively simple for attackers to spoof packets as coming from a trusted IP address (hence why I gave W1zzard a list of updated proxy servers).
With that IP Address that just so happens to be source routed through an IP address that the attacker can sniff on.
The unsuspecting victim would then sends the return traffic to the spoofed source, but "loose source routing" through the attacker.
The attacker can carry on whole TCP sessions this way w/out worrying about attacking weaknesses in TCP sequence numbers or lost packets.
This though, is not a problem so much anymore as their ARE packet resequencer programs out there now. The dropped/lost packets are though - Miss/drop the wrong one?
You may loose critical info, you needed.
Windows for instance, won't forward loosely routed source packets unless it has multiple interfaces by default (you CAN change this)!
NOW:
To disable Windows source routing?
Open the Registry Editor and access the following key:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Param eters
Under this key, create a new value called DisableIPSourceRouting of type REG_DWORD. The value should be set to 1 to just disable source routing and set to 2 to disabling IP forwarding plus source routing totally.
It'll respond to loosely routed source packets, and iirc, reverse the source route.
However, imo @ least, the TRUE way for someone to tell "who you are" online (for sure on a private network, say an intranet more than the public net), imo @ least?
Mac Address & combining ISP/BSP logs...
(There's no real way to fool that imo, unless you have a burnable prom on your NIC, or have multiple NICS you can use... but, that shows up in IP address matches to said MAC Addy's)
I worked w/ a partner of McAfee on such a project in fact using Intel ASICS for powering a device for this (early intrusion detection system - wasn't my idea, but in theory it sounded VERY sound to me so I worked on my portion).
That ASIC would scan thru 12000 ip/mac addys in 1 second, VERY FAST & what is needed.
Still, if a guy's "cagey" enough, & this was where I thought it could be "circumvented/penetrated"?
He just makes sure he NEVER uses the same anon. proxy twice under diff ID's & a yahoo.com mail addy (or others that do not divulge his originating IP in their headers) & he's "Good To Go", IF he switches MAC id's, & easiest way is to have multiple NICS, or a burnable prom NIC (and there ARE those).
However, if you know his ISP?
Their logs show it all!
(I.E.-> To whom he is talking to (including anon. proxies servers) & you're nuked from the get-go really, even IF you switch NICS)...
I had to do this madness & write up log parsing progs for a large ISP/BSP years ago, & in this capacity...
I was ok @ it I suppose because they told me anytime I wanted a job back w/ them when I left them, that I was welcome back anytime (only problem was, great place to work, but the money just isn't there), especially because I solved a problem COMPAQ/HP were blaming them for saying it was the modems we used... it wasn't (most compatible there is imo, Motorola Surfboard 4200 series @ the time).
It was their NICs, being parameterized WAY too aggressively in their nic driver settings for Windows XP rigs on the prebuilt boxes they were shipping...
Once, I got sick of it enough (too many calls from HP/COMPAQ system users, only 1 particular model, but a popular one)?
I took the extra time on a call @ level 1/2 to go thru each setting with folks on those setups, found & tested that, it worked - bingo, problem solved, & the ISP/BSP I worked for was NOT @ fault - it WAS Compaq/HP!
APK
P.S.=> Dialup internetting is the MOST difficult, because your DHCP addy changes EACH TIME YOU COME INTO THE NET thru your ISP... the leases are not long, diff. each time afaik... whereas on Cablemodem for instance? You keep leases for a decent length of time, & are accountable to said leased IP & activity under it & of course? It holding said lease longer makes YOU easier to track imo thru a log... apk

There are ways to hide for sure, but most users have no idea that the MAC address of any NIC or modem is sent with the packet. And who really changes their MAC address?

There are ways to hide for sure
Yes... absolutely.
but most users have no idea that the MAC address of any NIC or modem is sent with the packet. And who really changes their MAC address?
True, true, true, & thank goodness they don't imo (as to the originating IP (source route) unless your IP stack "reverses" it that is), because out here, there is nobody to "punch you in the head" for being a dork to others (typically there isn't, well until recently in the U.S.A., because now if you continually harass someone, you are subject to prosecution)...
And, usually, there isn't a problem as most folks don't keep things up (although, I have had a pack of them pursuing me for 5 years now in that manner - no need for details)...
That is, unless you REALLY tick somebody off. Witness Kevin Mitnick humiliating the then "Security Samurai" of the net, nearly constantly, playing w/ him...
He brought about his own doom imo, because he kept it up! Nobody likes to be humiliated. Especially on the job. Afaik, he didn't destroy things like Robert Morris did, but he was breaking rules.
Guys like Kevin Mitnick (or, more recently, Gary McKinnon) aren't the problem - it's the ones paid to do so for industrial or military espionage imo, who REALLY are, or the cracker/hacker (black hat) who find holes & don't report them...
As I outline above? With SOME nics, it's doable... not sure of brands/types etc. but I have heard tell of it (best to just switch NICS if you wanna "play games" but it only is effort poorly spent imo).
Give me the first 3 set of yours and I can tell who made the NIC.
No doubt, I've seen that one done as well. Heck, iirc? There's a website for it in fact...
Internet security is a joke.
Well, not really, IF you do things "right", you can be fairly safe imo @ least! Multiple layers of it... many network admins are afraid to pull OS level hacks (rightfully so, some apps may not work etc. because of things like port filtration, registry hacks, service login entity switch to lesser entity, etc. @ the OS level) & imo, too lazy to setup a test box either...
Today? IMO, the hassles aren't in the OS/NOS so much anymore or, even the routers (like CISCO IOS had not TOO long back)... it's more vulnerable apps, that are macro programmable etc. w/ email bombing being the classic now & DDOS/DOS too.
The latter however, isn't as effective anymore (but still works, too bad, it uses the callback nature of IP (tcp portion specifically) against itself)...
Still, there are defensive hacks to OS (in Windows, the registry) to quit responding w/in a time period & packet count from unresolveable servers (10.x.x.x spoofed packets, etc. as an example).
If you think about it, security on the outside imo, is not totally secure either...
Locks - They only keep honest folks out imo, & to quote Scott McNealy of SUN Microsystems: "There is no privacy - get used to it!"
(IPv6 truly WILL change this greatly, as well as making far more internet IP addresses possible, w/out subnetting...)
APK
P.S.=> Personally, if you guys are so concerned about RPG (and, I don't think you ought to be, he didn't seem like a freak imo, & was picked on A LOT too, instigating it (yes, he fired back some too)... contact his ISP/BSP & let them know! apk

I like my Sonicwalls at work. They are small business class and I wish that they had a few features that some of the nicer ones have. But all it means is that I have to stay on top of security a bit more.
Here at home I have every port that I dont explicitly use mapped to a IP that is reserved for no use. I got into my DSL modem and reprogrammed it. I haven't had a firewall installed for a few years, but do use aports and a few other tools.
I guess I only say it is a joke as I fix so much crap for people who have no idea, and the fact that certain ISP's block ports that are useless anyway so they can have "security". All for users who buy wal-mart computers who have children who know enough to get into trouble so they can complain about $50 a hour that I charge to fix their shit, that ends up costing more than a system that I spec out to them that I would have preotected and fixed for free in the first place.
After all of this I guess what I really mean to say, I need to charge more to make it hurt. Then mebey they will understand, but probably not.
