does anyone else find it odd that for intel to 'upgrade' they based it off of the P3 design? im not dissing the p3, just saying surely they should have outdone it by now.

Though the Conroe may be based on a heavily modified version of the "Pentium M" Architecture (on itself based on the "Tualatin" Pentium III architecture), the real predecessor of this architecture is the original Pentium Pro "P6" architecture Intel released in the mid nineties.
Both the Pentium 2 and Pentium III architectures were based on the old Pentium Pro, but Intel ditched it in favor of the controversial P4's "Netburst" architecture, a really bad move on Intel's part, it left the door open for AMD to take the performance crown from them.
Luckily, Intel's Israel team resurrected the P6 architecture for the "Dothan" Pentium M platform, and for a long time, Intel users have been pleading for a dual core, high FSB "Dothan" based desktop processor, and it seems Intel finally took a step in the right direction ;)

although the pentium m is a pretty good ocer and a pretty good cpu if read a lot of it but there are only two boards for pentium m and no good cooling solution that was the fact up to now ^^

Here is another URL review, benchmarks' section:
Hardware Analysis: Core 2 Duo testing

:)
* A fully "hands-on" review!
(I.E.-> They did their own testing (nothing supplied by Intel))
EDIT PART: Couple more reviews from today also (the one above is not on the url supplied below by gR3iF either, & these 2 below also may not be (very recent is why is my guess))

Legit Reviews: Intel Unleashes Conroe: X6800 and E6700 Reviewed

APK
P.S.=> That "Core 2 Extreme x6800" looks to soon be "THE CHIP" to own, imo @ least!
(E.G.-> In the review above, it soundly beats what I have for a CPU (AMD Athlon64 x2 4800+) by margins of 30%-50%, across the boards (IMO @ least & experience (as imo this is the fastest cpu I have owned to date), if it can do that? It's GOTTA be fast))... apk

intel is bloody lucky,
intel could choose a more optimized pipeline, less mhz, more operation per mhz with the tualatin line,
or the netburst, less operations per clock cycle, longer pipeline, more mhz
guess which one intel choose....
the first williameth processors (first gen socket 423 P4) were unable to beat the P3, not to mention the Athlon thunderbird,
the intel labs in israel kept the project alive,
why did you think that the first pentium M was called banias, the Banias is a old city on the golan hights, then came dothan, which is an ancient city in the west bank,
then yonah, which means dove in hebrew,
as i said, intel is bloody lucky that those labs kept the old tualatin alive in new encarnations,
