RAM Configuration Question: 2 or 4?

Hi folks! Hope someone lands on this with a definitive answer.

Current Config:
P4 2.4C
ASUS P4P800
2X256 KHX3200

I want 1GB total.

Question:
Do I junk the 2x256 to get 2x512 (Preserve the dual channel)
or
Do I get another set of 2x256 to fill in all 4 slots and only have two DIMMs dual?

If the former: Is the performance gain I am going to get with total ram in dual mode worth the $$$ I sacrificed?

2 X 512 preferable for compatibility, and will probably cost you little, and you will be able to still have the opportyunity to sell your old ram, say 20$.
