America has been trying to set up low cost, city wide networks for a long time. While cities like Philadelphia hire private companies such as Earthlink to set up and maintain their network, and then post regulations to prevent high costs, Boston is trying a different approach. Boston is trying to have non-profit organizations set up and maintain their city wide wireless network. While this effectively cuts internet access costs from roughly $40 a month to an estimated $15, It will be hard for non-profit organizations to raise enough money to build a city-wide wireless network, and it probably won't be attempted by any other city. There is currently no estimate for when the network will be ready.
