According to the University of Toronto, using instant messengers such as AIM may actually help your language grade. While AIM is notorious for its acronyms, such as "lol", AIM also uses four features of grammar. The results of studying AIM and its affects on grammar are surprising- AIM users mix normal speech, such as the type that would flunk you out of English, and formal grammar, which would render you "uncool" if used in day to day conversation.

Sometimes when writing papers in school I find myself trying to write "u" instead of "you". A few have slipped by, but my teachers are understanding
