I've been working on a bunch of upgrades for my computer including a window and some other smaller things such as blow holes. I want a new heatsink for my comp but don't know which one to get.
Any ideas?

cpu?
personally, i like zalman coolers. i've had a zalman cnps7000-alcu on my x2 for a long, long, time and it idles around 38C. quiet, too.
Unfortunately, i can't find too many other people around TPU that shares my love for zalman.
I do hear the Thermaltake big typhoon is good, but i also hear its loud.

the only reason i didn't want a zalman is because they only have blue leds and the theme is going to be black and silver so it doesn't really work.

you can get led-less zalmans. i know that for a fact because i have one.
what cpu are you using this hsf with?

Heres a link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118114) to the cooler on newegg.
Actually, i think it looks really kickass. its freaking huge, round, silent, and not bright-annoying like.
when people look into my case, they're like "holy s**t!! wtf is that???"
Big Typhoon is a great cooler. It also comes with a practically silent fan.

agreed. dunno where i got it was loud. i must be hearing voices.
if i were to redo my whole setup again, it would have been with the tt typhoon. or a different zalman.

looks good and i like the price. u think that the zalman 9500 would be worth the cash or just stick with the one u got? also do you have any clearance issues with it and ur other components?

::nod POGE:: and its the best aircooler on the market. You couldnt go wrong with the Zalman 9500 LED-less one though. Nor an Artic Freezer Pro 64, Scythe Ninja (or any other huge FAN one) or the Coolermaster Hyper 6+ (kick ass from MaxPC and 6 heat pipes, well 3 x2). These are all great coolers and will serve you faithfully. Not to mention, they are quiet. Take a pick of any of them, they are all fantastic.

Honestly, i haven't had any experience with the 9500, so therefore i cannot attest to its cooling performance.
As for clearance, check out zalman's website for dimensions.
and i've never heard of that noctua one, but it looks like a silent solution w/o a fan.

mostly because i like zalmans, i'm going to say either the 7700 or the 9500. i haven't had any experience with the big typhoon, so i couldn't make an opinion there.
WarEagleAU
08-01-2006, 07:44 PM
yes, you can replace the fan on the Big Typhoon easily (most any 12 cm fan will fit) so your good to go on that front.
On the newegg posts. For 40 bucks on this one day sale, you've got the best cooler out of the bunch. Hands down, Big Typhoon is better than both of those (a $1usd more than the 7000Alcu) The Zalman is sweet in that it blows the air out towards the back of the case, but the big typhoon beats it in all benchmarks (on this site, anandtech, etc) Id go with that, and you should have no problems with headway as long as your case is 8-8.5" wide and you have about 2" clearance from your Videocard (though that shouldnt really be a problem at all unless you have an older mobo (think nForce 3 ultra).
P.S. I have plenty of experience with the big typhoon. Best bang for buck and its on sale ( I got mine cheaper at pagecomputers.com but now its like 43$ there)

did the big tyhpoon raise your case temperature at all?
WarEagleAU
08-01-2006, 08:16 PM
Actually, it didnt. The thing moves like 55cfm of air and with my case fans being so good, it actually lowered it by 2c. Thats not bad. It moves so much heat and air that its just too sweet to pass by. Id get it while its 40bucks. With shipping its like 45 at most I think and if you get it now, it will be here more than likely tomorrow or the next say :) GO!!!!!
EDIT: I see you have 1 120mm TT Smart Case fan, they move hella heat and air. You should be more than fine and your temps should drop more than 2c in the case with the BIG TT!!
randomperson21
08-01-2006, 08:19 PM
wow nice.
its a 120mm, right? so hypothectically (grah i suck at speeelingg) you could pop a higher cfm 120mm on it, right?
interesting.

In my opinion, Scythe has some very good products. Here is a link to their CPU Coolers.

Scythe does have good coolers, their Ninja is better than the Zalman CNPS 9500 series. It also exhausts heat off the back too.

The reviews that I read beat the Zalman if you get a higher CFM fan, which there are lots of...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835185001
It's cheap, and put a little more money and get a high CFM fan, and still cheaper than the Zalman with better performance.
I got this fan:

thats pretty shcweet. you can't swap out fans for the zalman. i can see how the tt has a big advantage here.
WarEagleAU
08-01-2006, 09:12 PM
Yeah, to me, thats the one drawback of the Zalman, but its worth every penny though. There may be a way to swap it out, but I wouldnt know it :(
Azn Tr14dZ
08-01-2006, 09:16 PM
But trust me, the Scythe Mine and Ninja are better than the Zalman with the 120mm fan I showed you, and still $17 cheaper too!

What about this cooler:

Oh...you have AM2...I would've gotten AM2 if my Big Typhoon supported it(yeah that's how poor I am, can't afford another cooler)
the stock cooler is wonderfull, all aluminium with AS5 in a 45ºc day it didn't pass the 45ºc under full load at 2500mhz, i use it and works for me, when i get a new cooler i'm going after the 2700MHZ
and btw i had a Thermaltake Sonic Tower in my P4 that i sold to my friend for 30Euros, just got them today to buy my new mouse
Azn Tr14dZ
08-01-2006, 10:41 PM
What's a good AM2 motherboard?
ATI hasn't launched their chipset yet in Portugal, but the one now is the
ASUS M2N32-SLI DELUXE WIRELESS ED. SOCKET AM2 (in my shop)
Here is the boards that newegg have:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=2010200022+1070921489&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=22
I got the M2N-E 'cause i don't need SLI and it was 30 dollars cheap than the SLI version, is a great board in my opinion, it could have a fan on the heatpipe, it gets to 50ºc

Per Azn, yeah, we did spend 2 pages talking it up didnt we ::loves his TT BT::
As for Mobos, Foxconn has one that Nvidia wrote the bios for and its AM2, has all the bells and whistles and a few extra the Asus one doesnt. When I go to AM2 or AM3, then Ill get the Foxconn, Max PC and CPU says its the best, and well, I tend to believe them. Check it out on Newegg, I know they have it.

HAHA, I think Ill wait for another year or so to build me a new gaming rig. Im just going to do a few upgrades on this one.
On a side not, I am gonna build me a media server/htpc for my living room, got the stuff saved on newegg. That way, all the movies, (games, XXX) I download, can be streamed to it and what not :P

figure by the time i graduate, in 2 yrs, my current sys would make a decent file server when i go off to college. and then just get a laptop.

You have a slightly older system than me, so you would get a new rig sooner. I'm getting a new rig 6 months after AM3 is out(to make sure it's good, maybe Intel)...and I'm probably going to make a game server out of this one...but upgrades I'm getting soon:
-2 more Western Digital 80GB SATAII HDDs(4 Drives in RAID 0!)
-2GB(2x1GB) of recommended memory from DFI-Street
When DX10 comes out:
-Windows Vista
-2 mid-range nVidia cards in SLI(have to mod my Ultra-D to SLI-D first)
-Dual-Core Processor to last a little longer

When i graduate in 3 years my system will be way outdated, so as soon as i get a job i will get a new pc, meanwhile i'm going to upgrade this one a bit more

isn't am3 going to use the same socket as am2? so you could upgrade with just a bios flash (much like a64 939's to x2's)?
and a 3 year old system wouldn't be good for gaming, of course, but as a server maybe?

For those wondering, you can swap the fans on the zalman. It will require that you cut the fan out of the case completely. Leaving just the housing where the motor is kept. If you look on the zalman, you will see 2 phillips head screws, remove these and the middle frame slides out. Once its out you mount your cut fan to the frame you just removed using the 2 screws that held on the stock. You might need to start a hole in the cut fan so you can get the screws in. Now, this is important, you must use alittle double sided tape to raise the mounting of the fan, maybe 1cm or so, so the fan doesnt touch the bottem of the heatsink.
I know this works, for the fact that i got a Zalman 7700 with a Silverstone fan inside (white) It was damaged during shipping, so i actually bought t_ski's Typhoon as a replacement. Woot, cant wait till i get that....hopefully let me go alittle higher on my clock =)

08-02-2006, 05:39 AM
Between the Typhoon and my 25mm thick fans in my side window I had anout 1/4" left. It was close, but it was OK. My window, BTW, is 1/4" think plexi mounted behind the panel, which puts the fans even closer to the CPU. I thought it would be cool, er I mean great if I could line up a 120mm fan over the Typhoon in the window, and maybe use some kind of duct to force the air from the outside right into the typhoon.
HighLife
08-02-2006, 07:33 PM
I mounted my fans outside the plexi for now. This is because with my current setup, the cpu fan comes within a inch of the glass. Putting a fan there is just stacking a slower fan on a faster fan.
I think ill keep it like this with the typhoon too, when i get it. Should give it alittle more breathing room.
BTW, the zalman i have is the 7700, which is a 120mm fan. It was replaced with a silverstone 120mm rated at 110cfm. To bad i never got to use it =(
