h'ok, computer is running slow, found out it was running in pio mode, fixed it and also changed the data cable to an ata 100, it was on a 66. On that reboot, it wouldn't boot into windows. Now i have seent his once before, but i can't remember how i fixed it. It sits at the "welcome screen" with nothing but the little "microsoft windows xp" logo, and just the blue screen, any ideas, or questions?

Your cable probably has issues at that speed... Another one will cost you 2$

no no no, you don't understand. even AFTER changing back to the original, it still does it. Now i'm thinking why this has happened. I did a chkdsk /r and still no luck, gah. This is so annoying, i didn't even make a backup :(

fyi, i'm a full time i.t tech :D
(p.s. The cables at my computer shop cost nothing, lol. We give them out for free :D)

Try booting into safe mode and then changing it to ATA66 from PIO?

try booting from the windows cd into recovery console and run fixmbr and fixboot commands, that helps sometimes good luck :)

Sounds like the OS is corrupt. I don't think hanging at the windows startup screen is anything to do with what mode/speed the hard drive is running at. I think you'll have to see if you can fix it with the windows xp recovery console, otherwise it looks like your facing a clean installation of xp. But you should really have Norton Ghost, that would have helped get you out of this tight spot if you had a backup image.

You ever change the BIOS from PIO to UDMA?

Or make sure that the drive hasn't had multiple CRC errors first to fault it into PIO mode only?

Thanks for all the comments guys. I believe this issue isn't caused by transfer speeds because the trouble computer is actually a laptop. Seeing as the only way the transfer speed can be changed (according to my research) is through windows itself, i can't see how it could of changed by itself. I know windows does, but only in the case of HDD errors. I ran a HDD test with seatools with no errors found, and i know seatools isn't always right, but i'll roll with it. About to try a chkdsk /r now AFTER i make a ghost, i don't wanna go screwing anything up now...then i'll try a fixmbr, then fixboot, i'll report my progress... all other comments/suggestions are welcome!

Connect the HD to another PC via 2,5" -> 3,5" adapter for a backup.
Have you tried Spinrite?
