Ok, so Ive bulit before but always with intell, and ive decided to go a slightly diffrent route with this next build, and would like to try building with an amd processer. I was wondering if anyone could really explain what to look for in a AMD porcessor.

Thanks for any help.

It really all depends on what kind of rig you want to build. The X2's are probably the best bet right now as they are fairly cheap and really good processors.

This is the worst time in the last five years to shy away from Intel, frankly - the Core2 rules all at the moment...

bang for the buck AMD x2 are the best but for performance it is intel. Intel has very overpriced motherboards and Amd is going to knock them off with a quad core chip soon. If your going the Amd route buy a 3800x2 and overclock it. If your buying a Conroe intel chip wait a while until there motherboards and ram become cheaper as they become more numerous. Amd chips are lightning fast and Conroe is about 40 perecent faster than Amd but nothing uses eithers potential at this point so I would go with the cheaper of the two. :wtf: :respect:= Conroe even thoe I hate intel.

its the worst time to build any machine at the moment, so much is gonna change on the run up to vista, AMD and intel will have quad core, DX10 graphics, etc.... wait till vista and see what hardware works, or if you are after a system that will sort you out, X2 3800 is one of the best buys, and overclock the hell out of it.

Well, it's currently possible to make a system 3X (almost 4X) more powerful than mine, so it's not that bad a time still. It's a bad time for AMD thoe.

I'll have to agree with cjoyce. So many things are going to change in the near future. New standards, DX10, Vista, and thus, new hardware.

I would wait until, say... February next year.

Do you have any upgrade options with your current system? My mobo is roughly 3 yrs old, and I now have the opportunity to buy a used better chip for my system - a friend is upgrading to dual core, and the price of X1900's is almost too good to pass up. So I'm looking at about $400-$500 for a significant upgrade of two key components

I'm hoping that'll tie me over till other options are available next year. And I'm Intel all the way (for now).

agreed this is the most confusing time to buy anything although i could not resist , so what i did i have sold my amd x2 4800+ which i bought recently (since price is dropping on them fast) and my old amd 4000+ with the used Asus Sli Premium mobo and 4gb of corsair xms ram for 900 dollars on ebay ......................

and bought the e6700 duo 2 conroe
+ 2gb 4-4-4-12 patriot ddr2800
+ Asus P532-SLI E Deluxe mobo

for 1,0024.85 dollars from newegg.

i love AMD but after seeing what these new core 2 duos can do i am a believer .

P.S the e6700 is like unbeatable by any am2 cpu out there not even the fx62 can touch it , and the price if half of it , unbelievable .

It's only a bad time to buy graphic cards. Conroe IS good, no matter what AMD will come up with.

Nice work and congrats on the new rig (sweet) - I've actually made money upgrading before by selling the old components on eBay, sounds like you came darn close :) - it's all in the timing.

YEAH , thx , i usually keep my eye on the market prices and ebay , cause i could have waited and let my amd go so down that i wud have not been able to get my moneys investment in it , instead thx to intel duo 2 prices i was able to get the 2nd best cpu and other parts for almost a swap of the price for my current amd .

will post how good conroe is when i benchmark the crap out of it =).

The best bang for the buck is the E6300 I have to tell you unless AMD lowered prices, again.

the e6300 overclocks real well too , u can easily hit 2.2 - 2.3 on it with factory heatsink , many reviews on ti for doing so too.

and it also beats the AMD X2 3800+ , 4200+ , 4400+

I wouldn't really say it's a "bad" time to buy anything at all. AMDs are still great processors. Intel Core 2 Duos are great, but if you look at real game performance, not benchmarking, the performance is really similar and it's all down to the graphics card.

Also, I doubt everyone will be buying Vista right away. IMO, I would wait about a year and see how good it is, and if it's worth it. Most upcoming games should be compatible with DirectX9, or else the companies won't get much sales. IMO, it's a pretty good time to get a system right now. And even though many people are saying that you should "wait 'till DirectX10", I don't think they're completely right. Do you remember how long Windows ME lasted? Less than one year.

AM2 Pros:
Cheap, but great for gaming
Good overclocking, many selection for motherboards
Compatible with AM3, but DDR2 instead of DDR3
No need for new motherboard for future processors, just new BIOS update most likely

AM2 Cons:
We don't know how well AM3 will do against Intel's future offerings, a slight gamble

Core 2 Duo Pros:
Great CPU, fast and outperforms AMD at lower speeds
Great overclockability
Less heat

Core 2 Duo Cons:
More of an Intel con, they have chipsets and what not, so if you want to get a new CPU later on, you might have to get another motherboard with a newer chipset or revision to support newer CPUs.

All in all, both are great, and when it comes to gaming, performance is on par and depends on GPU mainly. Core 2 Duo may have more FPS at lower resolutions (800x600 and 1024x768)

It's only bad to buy now, IF you're going to get Windows Vista right when it comes out, which I think most people should wait to see how it goes.

Some are also saying "Don't buy, Quad-Core is coming soon!" When dual-core came out, they didn't do to well, maybe on par with their single-core counterparts. So IMO, quad-core won't be all that great. Maybe after a while, but not right away.

Try 3.2 to 3.6 on a decent mobo :)

yeppers!

as much as i loved AMD , which i still do , but the darkside of the force was very tempting as it always is , :respect: (Intel's Evil Inside)

i just updated my rig with a 3200+ and x1800. the 3200 was like $70 and the x1800xt 200. i personally dont see the point of jumping on the conroe bandwagen for marginal performance increase and all new hardware.

what i would do if i were u.
3500+ or 3800x2 skt 939 $80 for the 3500 $150 for the x2
dfi lan[party ultra $100
512x2 dual channel $100
x1800xt $200
250gb hdd $70
550w psu $80

630 for 3500+ or 700 for the x2...and it will overclock solid and be more then capable long after even dx10 is mainstream. after every game made today is backward compatable with dx8 and most are with dx6/7. do you really think that the second vista is on store shelves the hardware is going to jump into lightspeed? ...i think not
