I recently bought a new 3.2G p4 and was recommended and sold a 256m palit x1600 pro video card. Ive been looking at overclocking but dont expect to get amazing results, its max frequency on ati tool was core-661 and memory-454 (default core-500 and memory-400). Is there any software available to monitor the temperature? im a bit worried about turning everything up and burning it out. Ive been looking at upgrading to something a bit better, ive been getting into far cry and doom3 and think I should be able to turn my settings up and get better performance. Would a pci-e x1600xt be a big improvement on the pro? From what ive researched it would be a huge improvement. Im new to all this though and would appreciate any advice or suggestions.

if you are going to upgrade go for a x1800gto minimum. the x1600's are weak.

atitool can monitor temp if its a regular pcb. it just has to be enabled in the settings.

Ati tool says temperature monitoring is not supported.

I also have an agp x1600pro (XpertVision) with the same default clocks, at most I normally overclock it to 600mhz / 450 mhz at most.
I have never been able to monitor the temperature onboard with AtiTool, AtiTT or anything else. I have even used catalyst errr.. well I forget the version (came on cd with card and has a temperature monitor)) but it had a monitor, my personal feeling on this is that there is no monitor. The only monitor I have used is a laser point temperature sensor, which I pointed on the heat sink. Depending on what cooling system you have on the card I think it would be hard to "burn it out". You can always personally check the temp (if you can't keep your hand on the heat sink you probably need to back down the clock).

well if you do Scan For Artifacts try it for a bit say at least 10-20 mins and if you dont get any Artifacts you should be good

did you try everest? imo its a nice program which is able to read out the temps/fan speed/voltages of everything you want
just google for it

I have downloas everest 3 ultra, it's brilliant except for the fact it's only a trial and only half the tools work.

I can read the following temperature:
Aux
CPU
MotherBoard
Hard drive (no temperature given due to [ TRIAL VERSION ])

But there is nothing I can find related to video card temperature
Also, the only cooling fan monitor listed is my cpu fan

layt, I suggest you try everest aswell: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/329
It is a very usefull tool, but it look suspiciously like something else I have used, Aida32 I think.

Umm, I suppose you can read your video card temperature not-important?

My brother just picked up a Gecube X1600pro, He had me drop it my system just for comparison. I had Atitool 0.24 it didn't give any temps or clock readings. I downloaded 0.25 beta 14 and presto everthing worked!

I have ati tool 0.25beta as 0.24 didnt even recognise my card and gave error messages about not having ati bios installed. Anyways ill try everest and see if that will give me readings. Although I am thinking more along the lines of upgrading, I wanna play far cry etc with high settings and not have it lag. I have tried overclocking at max settings and it started messing up the picture, ive been using about 610 and 410 and it seems to keep it happy. What could I look at thats better than an x1600pro for around $300 Australian?

$300 you say? I suggest you go after an x800xt or a GeForce 6800 Ultra and see if you can find one for a good price.
Also, I have used atitool 0.25 beta 14 many times, overclocking is alright... but still no temperature :banghead:
