Currently, all computers are connected to the internet using Internet Protocol Version 4. This means that they have a set DNS, or Domain Name System, exclusively for that protocol. Windows Vista is compatible with the new IP version, IPV6. IPV6 boasts many features, such as more IP addresses, an increased speed, easier connectivity, and an elimination of network administrator burdens such as network address translation. However, it will take a long time for the internet to move from one IP protocol to another. Windows Vista pings websites first for IPV6, and then IPV4. This effectively doubles the workload on DNS servers. This could cause internet-wide stalls, brownouts, or even complete system shut down. The inventor of DNS, Paul Mockapetris, says "If you adopt Vista, your DNS traffic is going to double. You're going to see brownouts. All of a sudden, it is going to be mud season on the Internet, where things will just be kind of slow and gooey." Microsoft agrees that there will be an increase in DNS traffic, however not nearly to the extent predicted.

Simply uninstall IPv6 until your provider supports it... ;-) Problem solved... Stupid microsoft again to enable everything by default... Seems they really never learn lessons...

Why should microsoft go backwards?

If IPv6 is "more IP addresses, an increased speed, easier connectivity, and an elimination of network administrator burdens such as network address translation" then microsoft is in the right by pushing this tech forward. And the loosers who don't implement it should be left behind.

you have to realise how much changing from v4 to v6 will cost many buisiness, the losers will be the people using the new ipv6 because so far big business is dragging its heals. I wont be getting vista for atleast 2 years after it is released so i doubt these problems should effect me

i will change to a new OS when microsucks do a decent OS, for now i use XP (but i dont like it)

I don't know where they are getting their information, but this WON'T cause double the DNS traffic. The ping is simply the very first part of the DNS exchange, and accounts for almost NO bandwidth. Your typical ping is all of 32 bytes...oh wow, the DNS servers will be completely bogged down if they have to deal with an extra 32 bytes of data every time.
