Hitachi has discovered that squishing a large quantity of optical disks can yield a lot of data capacity. By developing SVOD (Stacked Volumetric Optical Discs) technology, Hitachi has figured out how to make 940GB of data fit in just one small cartridge. The 940GB model is made using 100 double layered DVD's, each DVD only being 92 micrometers thick. Hitachi is also developing a Blu-ray version of the product, which should yield an amazing 5 terabytes. The 940GB model should be available in early 2007 for ¥40,000, or $340 USA equivalent.
