View Full Version : Conroe or Crossfire upgrade?
What would give me a bigger bang for the buck?
I would need MB and CPU to go Conroe, then I would just keep my single X1900 card. The last time I looked Crossfire X1900 master cards are around 350.00 to 380.00 US.
My PC is used mostly to game.Any advice is REALLY appreciated!

I would say for best long term buy go with conroe and a decent mobo, since new grafics cards are coming out around the corner. but you would have to find one that runs with your ram
I'm sure someone will post soon with better advice, and examples of what to get.

yeah pt hit it, I'm not to knowledgable on cpus and figured your might be older. If you want to spend this money now maybe get a conroe and wait for dx10. than buy one and sell your card if you think you will need it.
His opty at 2.8 is very good, no need to buy a conrooe unless you are a benchmark whore

if you definatly want to get something now, id say go the conroe, cus new gfx cards are coming really soon so u can get a new generation + old generation will come down a lot in price.
I reckon you should wait a little while before upgrading, cus as PT said, your CPU and current rig are pretty decent as is. Id say wait until they start to get a little old, that way you can get the latest stuff/pay less for current stuff :)
Thank you all for your input!:respect: I take it all to heart believe me.I am sure you all work as hard for your money as me, and need it to be well spent.
With the DX10 thing around the corner,...I will just wait.As was said,..my current rig is no slouch and as always the graphics card market will continue on,..so time to wait and save!

your gfx card is top of the line and performs splendid, your cpu is a opty that clocks like hell, so no need to change now, try to overclock a bit more :)

I agree just save up your money. The only thing a CPU does in games is make them load faster. Games are all GPU. Therefore, if your an avid gamer you may eventually want to upgrade your GPU. But I would say wait. Wait until DX10 cards are fully established b/c they WILL have bugs in them. I say wait for a while and buy it mid next year.

Crossfire won't work efficiently unless you have a really nice cpu. It will just a big bottleneck. So i'd say go for the conroe first, then perhaps look at crossfire or another graphics card.

Games arent all GPU. the CPU loads up all the physics and the bots and all the enemies and stuff, GPU does all textures and the actual graphics doesnt it? I know for sure that games arent 100% GPU reliant...by your logic you would be able to put an X1950XTX on a pentium II and run it perfectly fine, just wait a hell of a long time to watch it load :p

i say conroe if anything, but it might not be time to upgrade anything right now actually :) that's a pretty nice comp!
if you want to spend some cash, (and that opty is single core, i don't know if it is or isn't, and i'm lazy cuz i'm on my laptop and don't have a mouse so i hate using the track pad), maybe get a duco amd, like a 4200 or 4400, and take it from there. you could prolly oc that pretty well, and even sell your opty for some of that anyways.
but i'd just stick it out til dx10/kentsfield if i werein that situ

Your FPS will drop by quite a bit too.
