ddr and ddr2 have different package types. ddr is a 184pin, and ddr2 is a 2something someting pin package. simply put, if your board currently uses ddr, ddr2 ram will simply not physically fit in a ddr ram slot.

The upgrade board along with the appropriate CPU will run DDR2, but you cannot run DDR2 with an AMD CPU designed for regular DDR. Those upgrade boards allow an AM2 CPU AND DDR2. No mixing of ram types is possible.
