I am a complet NOOBIE when it comes to computer!!! :o

I recently purchased a custam box. I have a intel pentium 4 preccesor 3.0 ghz, a p4p 800 se AI series mother board, 518mb ddr ram, and a ATI radeon 9800 pro 126 mb. I am happy with the over all preformance with my whole system but on some games it gets a bit laggy. So i want to over clock my video card. But the only problem is that I HAVE NO CLUE HOW!!! If some one could PLZ tell me step by step how to do this and what other things i might need to O/C my video card that wuld be wonderful!!!

PS sorry bout spelling :o

Go download atitool from this website.
Push the find max core button, leave it, once it is completed remember the number it outputer, then set it back to defult push the find max memory button.
Once both of these are completed set both the core and memory to those values and create a new profile, save it, go into settings and set atitool to load with windows and set the load profile to the one you created with the new clocks.

Hey man thanks... But will i need to get more cooling for my computer if i O/C? Could i kill my computer by doing this?

if you're worried about killing ur computer then don't do it, it's an accepted risk when you overclock. you may need more cooling and you CAN kill your video card doing it.

Even though you have best fan cooler it will not get the most out its cooling capibilty unless you try improve your cpu cooling system. Installing intake and exhaust fan should do the job since you don't have enough money to purchase a new water cooling system.

and after u have done the find max core and max mem, set them both and then do scan for artifacts for a while, personally i do it for an hour and if none are found then it is good clock speeds, and it can kill ur vid card but only if u go stupid on it, with ati tool there is still a risk of damage but it is fairly low i feel as it backs off when it starts to detect artifacts (signs of overheating).

Also u have a very good card anyway and even with out being overclocked it should run most games very smoothly, try turning down the resolution and the anisotropic filtering and the anti aliasing first, will help with the fps, (any resolution over 1280 x 1024 u dont even need anti alias or the filtering as it makes very little diff i beleive) and if they r still un acceptable then u resort to overclocking, but yeah as that dude above says just let ati tool do its thing and u should be all right, wizzard has a done a very good job with it :D he gets three thumbs up from me lol

ps hope i havent confused u too much with my rambling :P

oh and another thing u may need to turn off the anti alias and that thru the control panel, so right click on the desktop. click the settings tab and then click on the advanced tab and search the options in there, or if u cant find it then they are definantly in the catalist control centre, open the catalist control centre (u get that when u install the drivers for the vid card) and look through the performance options there,

Umm... the silencer 3 is made for the 256meg version of the card, i.e. the card with the 9800XT pcb, this means that it may not fit totally onto your video card. Its no real problem just hope you got nothing against using hacksaws like i did :p . Also you might wana, instead of trying to make the fan connecter into a 2-pin plug, just plug it into a motherboard header and monitor it from there :D .

I dont understand how your games get laggy with that mashine. U tried to add more ram? Because my system doesnt lagg at all and i have 2 times slower graphic card than yours.(when i overclock it)

Not without modification, if you dont mind attacking it with a hacksaw or a dremel then it will fit.

Hero*
01-15-2005, 12:38 AM
Then what VGA cooler will fit withought any modification?

how much is the risk of blowing up the card if you do it using ATI Tool? Is it more reliable if you're doing it manually and do go mad on it?

sounds like you need more ram in your PC m8 :) an OC on your vid card wont help smooth things out...

I had a 9800 pro and a 3.0E... beleive me a 9800 @ stock is still a VERY fast card.... I too started with only 512MB RAM..... within a week I put another 512 in. :)

Also - when you put the Arctic cooler in, check the GPU core - if it is an R360, you are laughing - they can be flashed to XT bios (higher stock speed of 412/365 amongst other goodies)

Man i instaled the Arctic cooler wit no problems :D I have a R350 core though.... :( so it is point less to flash to XT for me :( LOL i havet O/C my video card yet LOL I dont get how u do it LOL im a RETARD ROFL could some one tell me how to plz but step by step and explain what happens in each one... Ohhh and im getting a SWEEET temp monitoring and fan controler here take a look: http://www.directron.com/aldv02uk.html :D

P.S. Hey my VGA cooler does not blow taht much air out... is taht normal?

ADV4NCED
01-27-2005, 03:00 PM
Yea, It wont blow loads of air but dont worry too much about it! ;)

ASM1 is correct, you need more Ram. When I ran 512mb ram Far Cry defaults would be all set on High but since I only had 512 Ram I had to play on Medium settings. Now that I got my extra ram, I've put everything on high aswell as some on Very High. Install Fraps and check your FPS during games, this will determine whether or not its your card thats slowing up your games. Low FPS means your card isn't running smoothly, but if your getting high FPS, then its definetly your ram!

i just replaced my gforce 4 64mb to a ati 9800 pro. Now with my gforce i got on average 150 fps in mohaa. With my ati i get a higher average around 250 but it goes up and down from 400-50. i lower my res. and it doest seem to help at all. If any of u guys have ideas that would be cool ty

ADV4NCED

I dont get it m<c>g, whats your problem? Your cards fps are good and they will go up and down. I'm sure if you lower res + details your fps will go up but if you're getting higher than 50fps personally, I'd turn up my detail ;)

@Hero: Download a program called "Fraps".

Use V-synch. thats all there is to it
It baffles me why people figure getting 200+FPS in games think its cool. Your Monitor can MAYBE do 160Hz at high res the rest of those FPS are wasted. Sure it LOOKS cool but is a total WASTE of power. I play most games in 1024x768 or sometimes 1280x1024 at 10/7@100 12/10@85 so more than enough for my 9800@XT.
MAX REFRESH RATE=MAX FRAMERATE remember this people! ;) the rest just looks good in an FPS counter

The only thing is with my 64mb gforce 4 i was getting good fps and it was stable. Then i get a pretty good vid card and my fps are jumping all around when it goes down to 50 it lags me up alil. Thats all i just bought some new fans and memsinks so ill see how they work when i get em. INstg8r i will try the v-synch ty guys for the reply
