everything seems ok except for a couple of websites which dont work as normal anymore, but they work on my other computer. When i try and buy a song on msn music it just stops on a blank white page, and when i try and login to tomshardware forums, it just gets an error message. so im wondering if anyone knows of a service which would need to be on for certain websites, because recently i disabled services which i don't need. Or anything else which could be effecting this? thanks

You mention services... have you stopped the DNS client? If so, turn it ON again!
Also, how about your HOSTS file?
It is a file used for URL-to-IP address equation & is typically located here:
%WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc
It is a text file you can open & edit using notepad.exe... & if while you are in there, you see any addresses in it that are equated to either 127.0.0.1 or 0.0.0.0 (other than LOCALHOST, this has to be 127.0.0.1 typically, & is an exception to this rule)?
Comment them off w/ a preceeding # (That's a UNIX style comment symbol, analog of REM autoexec.bat OR : in config.sys). For the ones that you cannot currently reach.
It is possible it has been 'redirected' (HOSTS file) to a bogus one, the QHosts virus did this... so, that said? You want to check it here, so it matched the location I note above:
Using REGEDIT.EXE, look here & make sure it is C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip
Then, in the left-hand side panel be sure DATABASEPATH is the file path I noted above...
That's one possible, others may be in your browser security settings (e.g.-> Turning off ActiveX, Java, &/or JavaScript can cause things like you are seeing, or disallowing redirects & such as well - check your browser security &/or privacy settings, or even ADVANCED settings)...
APK
P.S.=> Purging the ARP cache &/or DNS Cache are other possibles you may wish to try... this is about ALL I can think off offhand/on short notice for your SYSTEM LOCALLY that is... it could be your ISP/BSP had its DNS server cache poisoned too, but that is out of your control... but, surfing via a proxy server (even temporarily) can show if that is the case, or not...
DONE EDITING NOW: Gotta run to visit friends, but others here can take you the rest of the way... apk

thanks for the reply. i have checked that file that you mentioned and there doesnt seem to be anything in there which is wrong, also i have checked the settings on internet options such as security, and advanced options. But i cant seem to notice anything which is disabled, i enabled a lot of stuff which i dont know what they do just to see if that was it. However, still the same problem

How about telling us the error message you get?
What kind of connection? Are you behind a firewall/router?

Also:
Since you say SOME SITES COME IN & OTHERS DON' T?
Remember: I'd usually reboot the computer, (router/NAT firewall (if any)) modem, & power down both... then, wait a minute, & repower that electrical equipment again, BUT in the reverse order...
(You MAY/MIGHT be reading some of those from your memory & diskcache for your browser of choice... this will eliminate it being modem problems, &/or NIC hassles negotiating w/ the cablemodem/DSL connection... it is usually STEP #1 to try, & then, move onto what I said above...)

i have turned the router off and also the pc, but still the same. Also i have tried turning off my firewall, but that makes no difference. (zone alarm). heres the error message i get from trying to logon to tomshardware forum: Error: Your browser cookies are not active. This is usually due to:
(a) you have changed your browser cookie settings, in this case reset your browser cookie settings to their default configuration.
or
(b) you are running firewalls such as ZONE ALARM. In this case, adjust your firewall settings to allow cookies. For Zone Alarm info, refer to this thread: http://forumz.tomshardware.com/community/ZONE-ALARM-PRO-SETTINGS-ACCESS-ftopict14244.html
i have tried doing what it suggests though but cant seem to get it to work

What browser are you using? This matters - it appears you are NOT getting cookies for sites that you go to that require them is all... apparently!
That's one possible, others may be in your browser security settings (e.g.-> Turning off ActiveX, Java, &/or JavaScript can cause things like you are seeing, or disallowing redirects & such as well - check your browser security &/or privacy settings, or even ADVANCED settings)...

I need to know WHICH browser it is you are using, & its version... every browser implements security on everything, including cookies policies, differently!
* That's WHY I wrote that above in my first post near its termination... & it IS looking like this is the problem... your cookies settings!
APK
P.S.=> The problem may just be a browser configuration issue is all, & I doubt @ this point that it is ZoneAlarm (since you say you disabled/shut it off to test this all out)... apk

I'm getting a very similar prob, but i've recently downloaded I.E7. The only place i experianced this prob is on here - pages not loading correctly, cannot find server, usual stuff, every other site seems to be ok.
Everything was fine till i installed this, all other comps in house are running fine with I.E6.
Starmonger, as alec says, what browser are u using?

Just delete the file and see if that helps, wont do any harm.

Well, not if he has a HOME LAN... he will need the HOSTS file, & the LMHOSTS file (if he uses this one)... afaik, you need it for the LOCALHOST 127.0.0.1 address to be initialized, & MS' networking uses it (or, used to @ least, for home LAN work).

I'd be sure you update (provided there IS no issue w/ updating an old BETA IE7 w/ the FINAL BUILD file installer, & there PROBABLY is!)...
Anyhow: On the IE7 version? Well, you can check that much in IE7's HELP menu, ABOUT submenu... version # will be there.

Earlier in the thread i mentioned i had a similar prob to starmongor in that some web sites were not being found.(more importantly this one)
I installed the final release of ie7 about a week ago and havent changed any setting, service lists or anything. A couple of days later TPU was not loading (page not found) but after hitting refresh it sorted it.
However yesterday i could not log on to TPU for the whole day, tried in the morning no luck, went to work got back at 3, still no luck, was trying every hour till about midnight no luck:banghead:
Every other website was working perfectly execpt this, Even on my gf laptop (which is not fiddled with and running ie6) all sites loading ok except for TPU.
Tried everything Alec mentioned and even upgraded the firmware on the router to no avail.
Anyway today seems fine sofar, does anybody have a clue whats happening and why it only seems to happens with TPU.

Burn your webpage cache in your browser(s) of choice, & yes, the cookie for this site (assuming you accept one in the first place & all that)... & then? Login here & try it again...
APK
P.S.=> Edit: I don't THINK this site has any Java/JavaScript demands (let alone ActiveX/ActiveScripting), so that probably isn't the problem here, but if the above doesn't 'cut it' for you? We can work on that part if so... apk

Ok just deleted all temp file, cache and cookies.
Also turned off all add-ons except for shockwave, as Tpu requests it be on.
Still seems ok, guess i'll let u know if the prob rises its ugly head again.
Told my gf about the prob and she just laughed as she hates my comp, especially as its the only site i visit to talk about pc's, i rekon she knows alot more about pc's than she lets on and has sabotaged my comp or network just to spite me. lol

Uhm, I shouldn't say this, but I will: Give her some attention while you are on it & she nags you for whatever, because putting a computer in front of women?
PISSES THEM OFF HUGELY!
