Making a short movie - What to use?

My friends and I are making a short movie for an English assignment, we have the footage, but thats it. We were wondering what programs to use to Edit/Put together/encode etc, our movie.

I'd reccomend Windows Movie Maker (go search in your start menu), it's easy to use, it's self explanatory, and does everything fast.

Sony Vegas, but you have to pay, and it's for Professionals, so yeah, Movie Maker.

for encoding
mediacoder(google it)
its a free encoding app that can encode to any format you want and is pretty easy to use.

for very basic enditing try virtualdub.

also try the doom9 forums for more help, all they do is video coding/editing over there :D
