When clocked at 550/580 after a hour or 2 of playing CS:S it messes up and the VPU is reset etc. Max temperature to ever be recorded on ATI tool is 65C :/
Had the card 2 days and had already over 10-15 recoveries and crashes/resets :(
I thought it was the tempurature so ive been taking the speed down gradually but i see people saying it can run fine at 70-80C!!

Please help :(

Sory i should have mentioned im new to overclocking and stuff, although im not REALLY new. What are softmod drivers?
And yes im using the latest ATI drivers. I also have Redline installed and configured.

Oh and some extra info:
Im using the fan which comes with it.
When im on the desktop it runs at 40C.
Fan is always at 100% speed.

Just as a test i underclocked from 520/560 default to 450/470 and while idle i get 38C.

Which Catalysts are you using? if your using the CCC as opposed to the CP it could be a comflict with the Redline and CCC just a guess as CCC would have Overdrive in it as well

Im using the old Control Panel style version if thats what you mean, dont like the new interface thingy. I have Redline and ATI tool running at the same time btw.

On teh artifact thingy my temp is 67/68C after 5 mins at 552/581. Seems im barely able to clock this thing..... :(

thats could be your answer right there maybe
try running just one or the other

I would say run the ATI tool alone and adjust clocks from it and leave the Redline off

I need redline running for some fancy features it has. I only really use ATI tool for fan control and temp monitoring. If i turn it off will fan stay at 100%?
Just closed Redline, temp the same so no conflict there. Maybe causes conflict and crashes after 1-2 hours lol?

Going at 68C for 7 minutes, still no crash or anything. Games never gone past 64/65C, so why they been crashing/freezing/reseting pc/resetting vpu :(

well ATI Tool can control your fan speeds as well. I have a Sapphire 9800Pro tho I never got it with Redline I know it used to come with it. maybe I will D/l it and see what up with it

Have you ever used Redline? Ive configured it all nicely, will ALL those settings stay when i close it? The only thing i dont mind losing is the get rid of wallpaper while palying games feature (to save ram or something).

Well I know ATI tool will keep your Fan settings as far as I know

Well for 10 mins its been running fine, still no problems. Its on 69C constant now, is that ok? Still strange games having problems at max 65C. Also now and again like 2-3 times since i bought card 2 days ago the fan speed as dropped to like default or something, causing the temp to sky rocket (i pressume) and crash my pc.
During this artifact test my pc seems to be running slightly slower too, as in it stutters a bit and now and again my text stutters as i type. Is this normal?

EDIT: The timer on the 3d view keeps resetting, any idea why?

it would reset if its getting artifacts
the stutter is because the 3D window is workin hard Also there is an Update for Redline at Sapphire UTLRA slow website

Ok over 10 minutes there was 1 artifact, 3 pixels didn't match.
By the end of the 10 minutes at 550/580 it was running at 70C. is this normal?

well the Tool will heat up your card intentionally to test stability

Okay first Im cursing myself for gettin the Lite Retail Package as my card just came with 4.10 drivers and Power DVD. Now I had a look at the Redline software and it could also be a possible conflict with Redline and Catalysts as it seems you can run all your 3D settings from Redline Im not sure if you have settings in the ATI CP or not.
But Im thinkin it may be possible to run just Display Drivers and the Redline controlling all your 3D settings you could try uninstalling the ATI CP and see if you can just run it from the Redline alone that might be your VPU recover errors

I can uninstall JUST the control panel? Wont that break anything?

INSTG8R
01-20-2005, 08:46 PM
No I mean you could run it with just the Display Drivers in there and it would run fine you just wouldnt have any control over the settings but it seems Redline can control the 3D settings etc so the CP just may be redundant. All you can do is try and see if it works
id you have no device control then just reinstall (Custom not Express) and just reinstall the CP

Well I would say running a 500 dollar Vid Card at 70'C is a bit risky to begin with, and although its rated at being able to run between 70-80 I doubt that means it runs perfectly, it prolly means without risking a melt-down. My X800 pro is running at 524/562 and I hit maybe 55'C after 3 or 4 hours of DOOM3. Maybe some info on your case cooling and what kind of Motherboard you have and chipset it has would help us help you. But it's most likely a cooling issue, maybe a few case fans could help, my Aspire Super Alien case has 6 fans and keeps the inside of my system around 31'C. Or a PCI fan card could help too.

Hope some of this helps.

Vullcan... Uninstall Redline and install ATITool. You can set the fan to run at 100% which can lower GPU temp up to 7c. There's nothing wrong with the temps you are seeing, in fact with the stock GPU fan most XT PE average 70c - 80c, which is still within specs. Heck even 99c is still within specs, do you want your card to run that hot? not if you can help it. If you read the begining of the X800 voltmod it tells you what the GPU temps are rated. ATITool is a good tool to help find the max core/mem but some of it is trial and error by you. Use ATITool to set minimum oc of 10 to 20 mhz higher and create a new setting. Test the settings by playing your favorite games, looking for artifacts and of you'll know if it locks up. So start with the settings you have mentioned of 550/580 and set the fan to 100% and start there...
