Hi. I have Norton but it's terrible. It makes like a million extra processes...and is basically a pile of crap. Any suggestions as to some free anti virus software???

And also because ntl (my ISP) use proxy servers I don't need a firewall?? True or not??

This is going to be funny.....but I haven't ran a virus scanner in over a year.

I have found that if you run antispyware and run a check every once in a while your A ok.

Oh and I haven even caught any in forever in a day. I stopped running ActiveX everywhere, and I mean every wear.

Keep windows 100 percent updated at all times, and you'll have no problems.

I know I don't have any-virus because I move stuff from this machine to another machine at work that does ant-vi.

So this won't eat up CPU and ram like Norton?

From my experience I would chose the free anti-virus software in the following order:

Avast! (excellent control over settings, but you can't schedule scans easily with the free version)
AntiVir (almost as much control and highest detection rate* of these three, does have two annoying splash screens, one at startup that can be disabled, another that can't and pops up when updating sometimes)
AVG (lowest detection rate* out of these three, still not bad. Not as much control over how it works)

*this is based on what I generally read, it does change on some sites so I accept that you can probably find evidence that contradicts this and it may have changed since I last checked.

I would recommend the AOL antivirus (based on Kapersky with a brilliant detection rate) but it can infringe on your privacy if AOL chose to let it. I use Avast! now after having used AVG for two years. Avast! has come along a lot over the last year or two.

for me my solution is that i use panda free scan once a week
this programm finds everything but its memory usage and cpu utilization is too much so it really slows your pc down

it's FREE!! :D

Is that only the online scanner or the downloadable version? I can only find a trial...

And also because ntl (my ISP) use proxy servers I don't need a firewall?? True or not??

I'd say untrue because people can still get past a proxy if they want, plus a proxy offers no out bound protection to stop trojans sending out whatever data they want to. I'd say try Comodo. It's free, easy to use and more friendly than ZoneAlarm.
