When I run my Opteron at say11x 240 it runs fine at a ram setting of DDR 480, however, if I try to lower my multiplier to say x10,9,8, or lower my ram setting from ddr 400 to ddr 333 to get a lower ram divider I get a none booting start up or freezing during start up. Im not sure why. I was able to get my Opty to run stable at a max clock of 2.75ghz stable at 11x250 by dropping my hyperthreading to 800 mghz and as I increased the front side bus it went to like 1006 ghz htt.My voltage was set at 1.6v for cpu and 2.88v for my ram. I'm not sure why this is I' ve never heard of the cpu divider being locked downward? I also don't understand why I cannot run my ram at ddr333. Has ayone else had this problem??

I know it's not directly answering your problem but have you tried running the ram without a divider but trying (just to test) 3-4-4-8 @2T and see if she will go to say DDR550, you may need more volts, try 2.9,with the extra CPU speed at the higher FSB that should be pretty sweet.

yea i have that same problem with mine, i dont know y. if i leave it on auto it thinks its ddr333 and boots fine, but if i set it to ddr333 it wont boot. ive never really understood y, i mean my ram can hit ddr450 fine but it should run at any speed lower then that. just wanted to say ur not the only one with the problem

bcracer have you managed to unlock your cpu multiplier? Mine is stuck fast @ 17x

Would I get a better fsb if I could lower that some how? I cant get it over 900Mhz

i dont think u can unlock the multi with this board. u wont be able to get a better fsb than 300 with async unless u set the pci-e to 117. that will let u get up to around 320. otehrwise u can pencil mod it and get even higher but im not in2 that kind of thing. good luck!

btw best overclocking settings are:

v-link to normal
spread spectrum disabled
async for pci e and bus
pci-e set to 117 if ur card can handle that

Well now I can run my chip at lower mulipliers but my chip doesn't like my ram to run at ddr333 instead when I set it at ddr 333 it sets and identifies my ram clock at ddr 266. This is very strange it never did this with my old 3800x2. I find if I set my ram htt clock at 800 and slowly clock my ram/ frontside bus to ddr 491 I can run stable at 2705 ghz and higher but I have to set my voltage core at 1.60v which im wondering if its safe on air. During prime 95 my chip will hit a high temp of 61c. Under normal use its not a problem even during games like Oblivion it hits 55c tops. I'm wondering if my ram is going bad or if this chip has a finicky memory controller or if my motherboard interacts funny with Opteron chips. I do have the latest bios and it does identify my Opteron correctly. My ram would clockup to DDR 500 like it's supposed to on my old Asrock Dual but of course this was with my old AMD64 3800x2 not with a Opteron. No matter what I do this chip will not let my ram run at DDR500 unless I max the voltage on my chip so I'm leaning towards the chip/ motherboard being the problem . Also I find it strange if I lower cpu multi to x10 x9 and leave my ram at ddr400 it works fine but if you combine that with lowering my ram to ddr266 (which is what it will only let me set it at) I get lockups during boot up) What do you think? give me your imput.

voltage applicatoin during boot. I believe this is the problem, for me at least and possibly others.

It is the problem with theis mediocre MSI board. It applies standard voltage to boot untill information is read from the core cell chip, and then the CPU is overclocked before the memory recieves its extra voltage.

how many sticks of ram are there? and what chipset/mobo? i believe if you have 4 sticks of ram and a nforce 4 chipset it will always run at DDR333 some sort of chipset limitation from what ive read

im not sure what youmean im running my ram at the default voltage of 2.8v for my ddr500

increasing the voltage for my ram doesn't do a thing past 2.88v

I have sort of run into the same issue with my Mobo trying to get it past 260. I currently run it as 1:1 as I can, just the HTT is set to 800(1040). If I try dividing my RAM then I can boot properly either. In my case it may be I cant push the FSB much further because I "can" divide the RAM but not with any real OC even with a lower Multi.
I mean I am perfectly happy with 2.6@1:1 on the RAM and have run it like this since I got it.But now that I put it on water and am sitting here with a 22C Idle I thought l would see where this setups limits where, guess I was already there

Ive updated my bios and everything and still cant unlock the multiplier  I cant get the fsb over 225 (effective) it just wont boot, I have set it to what you suggest, it just doesn't want to go past 225, I just cant understand how some people manage to get 300+ Is it just a volt issue?

mine didnt run at 333 when I had 4 sticks, it ran at the correct 400 BUT it defaulted to 2T and would not boot @1T under any circumstances.

One thing to try, strange as it may sound, try increasing your chipset voltage slightly.....you may be surprised! I had varios niggles with boot up on my old system, with memory and processor multipliers/dividers and I remember playing around one day about a year ago and raise the chipset volts and everything booted for like the first time in a week.
