Hi guys,
I have this motherboard (http://www.asus.com.tw/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=0&model=1126&modelmenu=1).
It says that it runs at PCI-e X4 thru the X16 slot.
Is there any way to unlock it so it runs at PCI-e X16?
Cheers :toast:

no. it uses a chipset which only support pcie 4x. i have a mobo (asrock 775dual vista) with the same chipset. mine too has a phisyical x16 slot but with only 4lanes on it.

I have the same issue w/ my mobo, its because it has agp also and the chipset can only handle x4, it does actually say on that website (x4 max)
I would'nt worry about it, you wont see a massive drop in performance!

You shouldnt worry about that unless you are running a really expensive card.
You wont see any difference until you hit cards around the X1950Pro cards or higher.
They actually do utilize some of the extra lanes provided.
The only other time you will use the extra lanes is when you have higher resolutions.
Other than that you should be fine.
PS --> If you really want the extra lanes. Motherboard prices arent too high. You could get a really good mobo for $70-80.

I'm running an X800GTO 256Mb Fireblade SE... its running at 12 pipes atm. I can unlock to 16 pipes. Will I still see the performance boost from this?
If yes, what are the other lanes for then? So would some of the X1800 cards run using only PCI-e X4?
I am thinking of getting an X1950XTX later on next year (feb time), what mobo would you recommend considering my system specs (see left)?

No way to "unlock" the PCIx4 slot... if you look carfully at the 4x slot, you might even notice that there are no pins inside the slot past about 1/3 from the front (they just aren't there!), or look at the back of the board and you will see no connection to the last 2/3 of the 4x slot. I noticed that on my Gigabyte DQ6.
And like everyone else has said, won't make much difference at ALL. the bandwidth just isn't used.
I was curious to see if I could run my X1900XTX in the 4x slot and compare benchmarks - maybe I'll try that tonight :)

U suggesting that all MOBO manufacturers are going to focus solely on Dual Core?

Yeah sweet, i'd be interested in seeing what results u get actually...
What mobos would u guys recommend?

The probably just used the same slot part number - I doubt they are functional. I was surprised to see what I described on the DQ6...

It's looking more and more that way...

I'm sure Tigger will try to sell you a P5B-Dlx... :) I would go for Gigabyte DS3 or DQ6. I worked with a P5B-Dlx and am soooo much happier with the DQ6, better build quality and BIOS, IMO. The DS3 does not have a second PCIx16 slot.
Probably can't go wrong with either - I've chatted with people happy with both GB and ASUS.

Cheers sasqui... i'll start looking into what mobos will work best with the components I have so far - and maybe get in touch with a rich uncle... ;)

im saying that in a year when nobody will use p4s anymore, why should mobo manufactorers wasit space on the bios chip for micro codes that none will use?

well on that i'd say dq6 or dlx.i cant complain.my dlx does at least 560fsb.you need stonking ram though.i got mine to do a cpu-z shot at 560fsb(3.9ghz) but not much else.i was pushing my 900 ram to 1120 tho'.
i'd say.yer pays yer money, yer makes yer choice.
