View Full Version : Wiki Competition Dec 06
W1zzard
12-11-2006, 11:06 PM
Every month from now on we will hold a Wiki Competition.
A Wiki is a website that every user on the internet can contribute to, without special qualification or signup.
We have recently launched our Reference Wiki (http://reference.techpowerup.com) which we hope can act as a useful reference for computer knowledge.
Based on the overall contribution of users, the techPowerUp! Staff will pick five winners.
Prizes
$150
$100
$75
$50
$25
All prizes will be sent via Paypal. If you absolutely can't get a Paypal account for legal reasons, we will figure out a way to get the money to you.
Rules
This month's competition starts today and ends on January 15th 2007.
Everybody is eligible to participate, including techPowerUp! Staff, excluding W1zzard.
The five winners will be picked at the sole discretion of techPowerUp! Staff, based on quality and quantity of content.
You are free to pick any topic to write about, the idea behind the Wiki is to offer a broad range of knowledge about computers. You pick what you want to write about, as long as it is computer related.
Please do not copy and paste from other websites.
Fixing other people's spelling, grammar, layout does count as contribution and will be considered.
Adding additional information to an existing article counts as contribution as well. The Wiki automatically keeps track of which user added/changed/deleted which part of the article.
Please do not deface or otherwise harm the Wiki and the other posters.
Violation of these rules could lead to a warning, disqualification from the competition or ban from editing the Wiki.
In order to participate you must register an account with the Wiki.
The winners will be contacted after the competition is over. As winner, only your nickname and prize information will be released to the public.
TechPowerUp! shall not accept any responsibility for any damage, loss, injury or disappointment suffered by you or any other participant entering the Competition or as a result of accepting any prize. TechPowerUp! is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telecommunications network or lines, computer on-line systems, servers, or providers, computer equipment, software failure of any email or entry to be received on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet, telephone lines or at any web site, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to your or any other person's computer or mobile telephone related to or resulting from participation or downloading any materials in the competition. TechPowerUp! also reserves the right to change or amend the Rules if necessary.
Feel free to ask any questions you may have in this thread.

Question about the rules: Is it ok to copy from another website if you are the original author of the content? Like could I just copy stuff off my personal website that I wrote?

I'm adding some stubs so people get an idea of topics to write about. Of course I will fill them up myself as well over time.
Also mr W1z, can you add an option to show/hide stubs? And show only stubs. If people feel like writing they could select "show only stubs" and they get a list of stuff to write about.
Nm the last comment, stubs is a category, search them that way.

Nice idea W1zz - the Wiki wasn't getting quite as much input as it should've been.

Plenty of people - if you don't want to, no one is going to make you. But a lot of people enjoy writing about topics of their interest in order to help others. There is no need to write an entire article at once, nor do you need to write long articles, short guides about a specific subject are also useful.

If you don't get the idea behind a Wiki, fine. If you feel it's totally pointless, that's your loss. Here at TechPowerUp! we want to create a community, a wiki is a nice addition to that. Sharing our knowledge and helping eachother out is why we are here.
If you don't want to help nobody is forcing you to, but your complaining is of no value at all to us.
Though if you want to understand the idea behind a wiki you could take a look at wikipedia for instance.

Everything you need to know. Is there an action we have to perform to submit our contribution, or does the wiki track that ???
Also, great thing we have a wiki - with this many members, it has a good chance of growing to collosal proportions.

W1zz, this isn't totally related but it's the best place I could find to post it:
The guide on windows startup seems to be duplicating itself for some reason, under two different guides but I think if you change one it edits both.
http://img.techpowerup.org/061213/wtf943.jpg
I'm not sure why it's happening, but it seems to stay even if you take away the tags at the bottom saying which catagory it is in.
Edit: it only happens in the "Software" section, not in the guides section.

i know we arent supposed to cut and paste but wikipedia already has 99 percent of all this information!
Wikipedia has very global information, our wiki is aimed at this community, modders, tweakers, gamers etc. You can't find much about specific hardware or overclocking/mods/etc on wikipedia, that will be the value of our wiki.
W1zzard
12-15-2006, 10:16 AM
maybe motherboard specs should be brought into a common format so it's easier for people to find the interesting stuff?

What about if someone does, for example grammar correction, multiple very small contributions, but other one would do the same contributions as one time? The first one has more contributions, but the both have written the same amount of text? Does this give advantage to "multi-contributor"?
|EDIT| I think it's sad too that there are some pages which include completely copy-pasted paragraphs from Wikipedia.. :( Are people just that unable to write something using their own words, even if the content would be borrowed from somewhere else?

I agree. Personally I prefer to write my own bullshit and let others extent it. That way the information will represent this community over time. Copy/paste should give negative points. And if you really have to copy something, quote it.
I might not write the best stuff, but at least I write everything myself and write what I think is important for the readers. For example I don't think the amount of offices or financial status of a company is relevant for users of the TPU community. I think the ability to overclock or mod specific hardware of a certain type is relevant though.
Then again people can write what they want, W1zzard will eventually show us the way it should be done by rewarding the people who write the most useful things.

You probably noticed I flagged a ton of articles as plagiarism yesterday/this morning. The majority of AthlonX2s stuff was just copy pasted from wikipedia. I don't really want to be a party pooper or anything...
Don't know what procedure you want to follow on that W1z; whether to leave them intact for now with disputed marker, or just delete the contents. I've started rewriting a few of them (eVGA & Seagate), but there are still tons that are blatant copies.
Oh, and I want to thank DanTheBanjoman for replying to my discussions and answering my questions! I really appreciate it, makes this feel like a community.

Bank transfer can be done as well. Will just take a bit longer to transfer. If is too lazy that I could forward it via Paypal to my bank to your bank, omg that's complicated but works.
Or if you insist on donating, I'd say think of something TPU related to spend it on.

Ok people, I've cleaned up the Guides and General Computing articles so that the spam is gone. Unfortunately there is still lots left in the remaining sections (people generally just posting one word at the start). I will work on cleaning the rest, but I could really use some help for this if anyone would be kind enough. Please post any sections that you clean here so that other users know not to bother with them.
