Its not a coincidence that CPU's tend to cost more than motherboards.

I wonder how much goes in to R and D in motherboards comparied to CPUs.

not much .. cpus are billions .. motherboards are maybe a million, if even that much.

you get reference designs for most platforms and customize those for your needs

a silicon fab costs several billion, a top tier board making plant in the 500M region

CPUs. I would always factor in the R&D costs as it was a part of the production of the chip.

All you have to do to make and produce a motherboard is design a pcb, order a chipset, and mass produce it.
