well I have some old parts laying around and my little bro needs a comp to surf the internet, pay bills online, and possibly play some older games. I need a little help deciding what board, case, psu, cd burner, and hd to use. Give me some suggestions.
What I currently have, and wish to use
3.0 northwood 478, with stock hsf
512mb pc3200
5700le agp
tons of cheap fans
I've looked at some mobo's but not sure which I should use, also want to keep this as cheap as possible, since he wont be giving me any money for this. Also I'd like to keep away from really cheap $10 type cases, maybe $25

its more reasonable to go with a new mobo and CPU combo.......478 is DEAD! and is expensive.... go with an AMD 754 mobo and CPU combo.....use newegg..... they also have very cheap cases to choose from.......along with any other parts that are needed.....choose what you want
The 754 socket RUNS DDR1 memory....

Nothing wrong with running a p4 478 for a websurfer and older game player.
You can get some pretty cheap 478 boards, an IDE HDD and a cheap case/psu combo off of newegg for around $150.

whats the point in upgrading to a newer processor on 754 when 754 is dead ? hell why not go all out and build a complete new system? why because he said he wanted to spend as LITTLE money on it as poss, and the above spec looks fine for a budget/2nd pc. maybe get a cheap sata 80gb hd, and budget case as most come with 350-400w psu's that will be absolutley fine to run that 478 comp.
EDIT: oh i see your running 754  also 478 can run ddr1 ? as shown here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Pentium-4-P4-Motherboard-SKT-478-P4-800MHZ-VIDEO_W0QQitemZ280061749561QQihZ018QQcategoryZ4494 3QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

ok im slightly lost with the posts in here, but as i see it, why should he go out and get a processor and mobo for 754 when he already has a processor for 478? his processor should live upto the expectations hes presented, so theres no need to go out for another, also stupidbiznitch i dont see why anyone should take your advise as your making out everyone whos posted are retards with your "duh..." comments. Anyway back on topic, noobtastic those parts should do fine for what you are after, you should try ebay for the mobo but be wary as parts can be duds, also cant be that dead as newegg are still selling 478 mobos, heres a list of there stock anyway http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=2010200280+1070509907&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=280

I dont know boards for 478,
But a seagate hard drive would do you fine, anything over 40gigs and under 60 gigs should be plenty and keep the cost down. Go for a Seagate Barracuda?
as for CD Burners, im pretty sure that LG and Liteon have cheap but well decked out burners for around $30-40.
As for a PSU, go on ebay and get a cheapy no name brand one. Your not going to be overclocking, and for that graphics card it will run just fine.
Same deal with the case, shop around for a no name brand case, preferably black, but its all up to your personal preference. Use shopbot and other handy search engines.

you dont need a keyboard or mouse or anything?
the thing that kills building new computers from pre existing leftover parts is all the extra little bits and pieces...mice, keyboards, speakers, pci network devices etc, hopefully you wont have any problems there.

hes got quite a bit already. His old 900 mhz compaq finally died (reason for building), the monitor is 2 years old. If some of his parts dont work ill just give him some spare junk I have laying around until he upgrades it himself.. besides gives other family members a reason to buy him something other than the traditional home depot gift card for his b-day

it also means your computer is now free for your personal use and that other people cant stuff around with your property ;)
