Guys - sorry if this has been brought up elsewhere, I did a quick search and couldn't find 'owt so thought Id ask.

One of the regulars on a forum I admin built himself a new PC from bits bought from Komplett. The CPU he went with was an e6300 and after a few weeks he got the OCing bug and asked for some advice as he was pretty new to this. Various people chipped in and it became clear that some of the numbers he was quoting made no sense.

I asked him to run CPU-Z and Intels CPUID tool and this gave me the reason - his multiplier was set at 6x instead of 7x meaning his CPU was running at 1.59GHZ rather than 1.86Ghz.

Is this a known issue? As far as I am aware the multiplier is locked so its nothing he could have done

:o :o :o

ok, so Ive answered my own question. Note to self - Dont post on an empty head :ohwell:

The clock frequency multiplier in Core 2 Duo E6300 is 7x. With 266MHz FSB frequency it provides the 1.86GHz clock speed. Note that this multiplier can be reduced to 6x, because the processor supports Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology. In case of lower workload, the processor frequency can drop down to 1.6GHz and its typical heat dissipation can be reduced to 22W.
