Of these cards, which will fair better in the future as well as for our current games? I heard that the 7900GTX might be slightly faster for our current games but will outdone by the 8600GT a few months on.
What do you guys make of this?
This graphics card will be for my new computer, specs below:
CPU: E6400
Mobo: Asus P5N32-E SLi (Need SLi capabilities)
RAM: 2 x 1GB Transend DDR2 800
GFX Card:
HDD's: Seagate 200Gb
PSU: A-Open 500W
Tell me what you guys think of this pc...
O and btw, I live in South Africa so prices will be kinda useless and also bear in mind our technology isn't as good as yours so we don't have the latest of everything.
Thanks in advance!
8600gt, i'm considering one too ;)

Id go with the 8600gt b/c of DX10 for the future but the 7800gtx is a fast card to its up to u

Go for the 8600Ultra, it should perform on the level of the 1950XTX or the 7900GTX but with DX10 so itll perform better in DX9 games and DX10 games of course.
But at the same time the GT should o/c to around ultra performance.

also if your gonna sli 2 8600gt's at some point i would defo get a 650-700w+ psu as 500 might not cut it.

With what we have been seeing, 700w might be the minimum...

Ok sure I see your point on the 500W PSU. I'm not going to OC this pc, so I will look at either the 8600 Ultra or the 8600GT - Prices will probably play the biggest role in my choice.
Also, what brands should I go for? As far as I know MSI, Leadtek, Asus, Abit, XFX and gainwood are probably the best right?
But otherwise the rest of the pc sounds good huh ?

What do you guys think of this card, Asus N7800GT

Would you be able to put 2 of these cards in SLi considering its already a dual proc. card?
Also, how would this card fair against a 7900GTX?

Lol your talking about the 8600s and they arent even out yet.
So no one can even tell you how well it will do against any other card.
As for the 7800GT it is a good card as I have one, but there are better cards out there that are usually close to the price like a 7900GT or even better an X1950PRO.
The 7900 series replaced the 7800 series and gave a lot more performance.

tig i wud of though u wud of went with the x1950XT, not 7900GS, i reckon that those dx10 mid range cards are not going to perform a lot better than the 7900GTX or x1950XTX, but surelly will in dx10 games

judging by the fact you can now get a geforce8800gts for £100 less than release price now (based on one i found at scan.co.uk for £258), by the time these and the ati's turn up all you saying you like the look of the gt may well find one of these well within your budget
its quite the same now, as someone pointed out on here the other day you can get a 7900gs for £1 more than a 7600gt

The 7900GS is now considered a mid-range card.
Heck they even consider the 7900GT, 7950GT, X1900XT and the X1950PRO all mid-range cards.
But dont forget these cards are around $200 (a little bit more for the 7950GT).

what i dont get is why bring out 7950gt when the 7900GTX is a lot better, surelly when going up in series= better performance or speeds

Yes the 7950GT is not as powerful as the 7900GTX, however, the 7950GT is a cut down version of the 7950GX2 cards. Also it was put in there to go up against the X1950PRO (which it does stay even with). I agree that it seems a little awkward, but thats what they did.

The 7950 is a 7900GT with higher mem and clocks. It has the exact same specs of the hard to find 7900GT KO. No relation to the 7950GX2 other than the fact that both use the same 7900core.

aah, now this is interesting, as the gx2's were based on the laptop version of the 7900
does anyone know if the 7950gt uses less power than 7900gt or gtx (obviously it uses less than the gtx, what i mean is will it be more energy efficient)and do they run much cooler? i have a shuttle style cube(biostar ideq330p) and if one fits (have to take measurements still) i'll keep an eye out for one going cheap
p.s. sorry for going a bit off topic

Woops I mistyped this sorry.
Sorry to confuse some.

We dont know anything abt the 8600 GT.. except..
7900 GTX - 24 Vector Shader Pipelines - 24 Brains, 96 processors.
8600 GT - 48 Scalar Shader Pipelines - 48 Brains, 48 Processors.
Since games are starting to use more general shader performance and programs perform things in twos and not fours, Scalars (wich can do 1-2 things at a time) are actually better than Vec4s wich can do 4 things at a time, but have only one brain so those things need to be the same, meaning that it would take abt as much time for a Vec4 pipeline to do that thing as it would take a Scalar, and since there are more Scalars than Vec4s.. But some things still come in fours, so then Vec4 has the lead.

not sure about these mid-range cards u no, look a bit too cheap, although spec arent that great still though.
i think if you are going for a dx10 card wait 3 or 4 months and something gd will come out from either amd or ati and then buy, i was going to make the mistake and buy the 8800GTX, but i waited and bought a 7900GTX.

I think the 8800 GTS would be the best buy for me. Expensive but will give great performance and later on when the card gets older I will just buy another 8800GTS and put them in SLI.
