Eventually I believe there will be a huge difference in graphics. However at this point, you're really just paying for a new interface. It's a brand new OS, with brand new problems, with brand new drivers for everything. Give everyone time to learn how to create applications/games for it. Personally, I'm getting it out of pure interest.

If you can get it for free, I say go ahead and download it and make it a boot iso or have it mailed to you. Otherwise, if you are buying it, right now, Id say no.

I'm going to wait and see what happens. It has an awful large price tag.

However at this point, you're really just paying for a new interface.

Well, it's got SOME nice things in it (Address Space Randomization, UAC, UIPI, MIC, IE7 "protected mode" (better than on other MS' OS no less, even Server 2003 & XP), & its base being Windows Server 2003 code (security features really that you DON'T 'see', hands on typically))

I had a GOOD discussion about this w/ Russ Cooper of NtBugTraq here on these forums in fact, you may want to take a peek @ it here:

http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=22757&page=3

Good stuff!

It's a brand new OS, with brand new problems, with brand new drivers for everything.

This IS going to be a hassle, waiting for some apps to run on it (like AntiVirus stuff, a big one lots of folks note)... driver model changed apparently.

Give everyone time to learn how to create applications/games for it.

That's not a problem imo, for MOST apps... ones that function PURELY/MOSTLY in usermode (Ring3/RPL3 execution area of the x86 compatible CPU family).

Driver related apps (like AntiVirus' use for example) though, this has been a hassle from what I read/see online from folks in forums, and on 'heavier technical programming oriented sites' (for lack of a better term here on that note/account).

Personally, I'm getting it out of pure interest.

Agreed... I like how it looks, & I like what I read about its 'innards' for security too!

The "DRM" stuff though... it IS sort of a 'turn off' & the fact it's being SO heavily implemented means that Hollywood & others producing media are spending monies (finally, after ripping off musicians for instance badly for years (9 inch nails Trent Reznor comes to mind here for me @ least)) to protect their 'cash cow/money tree'.

Eventually I believe there will be a huge difference in graphics.

Probably, & as a direct result of DirectX 10: I've done a bit of reading on it, & it IS an improvement efficiency-wise!

(HOWEVER, I am also hearing about 'backward compatiblity issues' as well w/ older DirectX versions... from what I read, this is the first REAL 'rewrite' for efficiency AND features DirectX has had, since version 3 (NT4.x iirc had that, as far as NT-based OS' go)).

The "OpenGL translated to DirectX API calls" stuff also bugs me, but from what I understand, Microsoft DID 'backpeddle' on this somewhat, & is going to allow users to install OpenGL natively again, so it operates as it did on 2000/XP/Server 2003, so your OpenGL games can render natively once more, & look right + run as fast as they did on older OS', prior to VISTA.

(Good news that last one, for gamers who like OpenGL!)

APK

P.S.=> Thing is, I have a 'watch that runs well' in Windows Server 2003 SP #1 fully current hotfix patched, using IE7 on it now (also fully patched)... do I need to use VISTA? Not really... apk

My take, and I've seen Vista in action. If it ain't broke, don't fix it - stick with XP unless you desire to troubleshoot application and driver incompatibility. No new OS is ready for at least two service packs :)

The interface paradigms are nice, but I find more emphasis on the interface than the actual document/object when it comes to screen real-estate.

Maybe a bit harsh it looks really nice, but this heavy handed drm stuff really winds me up. they will revoke all drivers for a piece of hardware if someone works out how to record premium content thru it leaving the consumer with a paperweight until the manufacturer fixes the problem. If you then swap said hardware until they sort you fall foul of Microsoft anti-piracy rules and they revoke your license. All to protect some crappy hollywood blockbuster, seems harsh to me.

I think I'll upgrade to Vista and DX10 when there's a lot of DX10 games out, there's a lot of DX10 hardware, and there are some seriously good applications on Vista that simply don't work with XP. Basically, late 2007 :p. I can think of WAY better uses of $250 than a copy of a shiny operating system.

I am "getting it" as I write (aaaarrgh, matey) to try it in a dual boot config, tried a previous build 5346, wouldn't install even though others had success with different builds and similar hardware, but the version I am getiing now is the latest prerelease build rtm 6000 Ultimate so I am crossing my fingers. I also got XP pro real early to and it worked out great, and I just love watching people figuring out how to bypass all those fancy DRM setups. I pay for software from companys that are original and dont steal others intellectual property.

@noneed4me2,i tried the 6000 rtm mine is a multi version with all the home and buisness versions on it.it looks ok but there is not much chance of getting it activated.make sure you dont let it get the wga update or you've got no chance of using it for more than 30 days.

i'm gonna wait till the 30th and try and get a home premium upgrade from xp pro.

Exactly what intellectual property did Microsoft steal? I think the law would love to know that, considering it's a felony and all.
