Im thinking of jumping up to a Opty 185 from my current Opty 175. The difference in price will be 100.00 after I sell my Opty 175 which will run stable currenty at 2.7 ghz 1.60v and during prime95 will some times hit 59c to 60c (kinda hot but okay). For everyday use I usually run it at 2.6 ghz at 1.50v fsb 237x11multiplier and my temps never get over 52c. My thinking is this new Opty will run at 2.6 ghz at the default 1.35v and should hit 3.0ghz when overclocking it slightly maxing out my system for the future. I was recently retired at work and nolonger really need my super pumped up video card to play games late at night on my off day and was thinking of selling my x1900xt 256 mb video card netting about 100.00 dollars after purchasing at evga 7600gt 256 at 99.00 to replace it so my kids can play there moderate video games (they play at a 1440x900) I was thinking a 7600gt could handle that resolution without a problem. I was hoping a 7600gt would be fine for the next year or so and having the max 939 cpu at 335.00 was better future proofing. Thinking that I could always buy another 7600gt to run in my sli motherboard if need be or buy a DX10 card in a year or so but that the 939 chips might rise in price if I wait to buy a Opty 185 or Fx60 chip later on. What do you think? remember this computer has to last a few years. Also if anyone has a Opty 185 how does it overclock compared to a fx60

That is pretty hot, I get scared if my cpu goes that hot.. Also, why don't you wait for k8l to come out. This "jump" will not make too much difference.

Im just trying to not have to upgrade for a while and I really like my current set up. This is just a idea my last system went for 6 years without an upgrade and was I tryng to future proof my computer to stop the upgrade merry go round. Also 335.00 for a opty 185 is cheap cheap. Also my current Cpu only gets that hot with prime95 no other video game or program taxes it like that it usually operates at around 49c with heavy gaming at the 2.7ghz setting.

I know, but why don't you wait...

Because if I do upgrade when K8l comes out I will have to buy new expensive ram and video card and If didn't do that but wanted a Opty 185/ fx60 they are gonna go by the way of the 3200xp which curently sits at 132.00 due to shortages. hope your getting my point.

I see what you are saying. Sounds like you have a decent plan, though it kills me that you wanna sell your video card. Id get the processor and keep the card. Even if they dont "MAX" it out (the kids) you'll still be somewhat futureproof, unless you really want a DX10. Id keep the card and get the new opty. Thats just my 2 pence worth.

I don't know if this is a super good Idea but the other option is to buy a 4000+ for 79.00 then overclock the hell out of it and sell my opty 175and x1900xt 256 replacing the x1900xt with the 7600gt netting around two hundred dollars and still having a great home work machine / moderate gamming rig.

I get your point. If you are so convinced you can make this last and there will be no huge tech gains then go for it.

i know I hate to sell my x1900xt its a great card

what do you think about the cheaper option

A cheaper option for a gfx card? A 8600ultra...

no I ment the second option the buying 4000+ ,7600gt and selling the x1900xt which after selling the opty 175 would really be a net of 221.00

or a gess I could buy a dx 10 card after selling the opty 175 netting zero.

alright so far keeping the x1900xt seems to be a best choice so I will keep it then. Now on to the cpu for 100.00 more it seems to be a great choice

Firstly, I would never sell an X1900XT for a 7600GT. Secondly, I don't think $100 is worth it to go up a few hundred MHZ. I personally would buy a decent water cooling rig and OC the hell outta that 175.

Well how would any of this save me money and firstly is not a word. I also noticed you have a water cooler yourself so im sure you realize they cost more than the difference between a opty 175 and a 185 so that makes zero sense. Sometimes people don't read a post. I never said I was selling my x1900xt to buy a 7600gt. I was clearly stating I was down grading my video card on purpose and upgrading my cpu with the difference. Also there is nothing wrong with a 7600gt it was Pc Magazines computer device of the year for bang for the buck. I realize it not a x1900xt just like a x1900xt is not a 8800 series card which is why they cost more. I also realize a 7600gt is a very good video card and since I have a SLI board if need be I could always add another one in the future

not a bad idea was looking at a 6800 ultra today but its my understanding a 7600gt beats it.

I was also thinking of getting a 6800gs but i think its slower than a 7600gt aswell

i meaned 8600ultra, they're not out yet, and will probabily be the best bang for the buck for dx10

I am shortly to get the Opty 185 once they are re-stocked at my internet store which I think is 29th Jan. Done quite a lot of research into overclocking and 3Gig can be acheived in most cases, 3.1Gig is the most I have come across and that was on water but dont know if that was required or just the guys routine setup, there are some tho without particularily good overclocking Mobo's who only get 2.9Gig (I only say "only" cause I get 3.25 outta my 4000+).

That will keep me happy until the summer when i will update my entire rig not sure what the CPU/Mobo will be, waitin to see AMD's new offerings before I decide.

If you mostly game I can recommend as a VERY cheap and fast solution the 4000+, they clock easy, remain cool on low volts and at 3.2+Gig would be a sure fire way of adding some revs to a 7600GT but TBH in your case, I would probably stick with your current Opty, its a good CPU and if a 7600GT is good enuff for you, then your current dual core Opty certainly is, to me it's not entirely logical that you downsize Gfx and upsize CPU????

I misunderstood, I thought you were selling the X1900XT JUST to upgrade the CPU and I wouldn't do that. BTW, I don't have water cooling, the Arctic Freezer pro is an air cooler.

thx tatty was leaning toward keeping my x1900xt selling my opty and just getting the opty 185 to see if I can hit 3.ghz. I hate to get rid of my x1900xt but its hard to justify having it. I had a 7600gt in my hands today and for 99.00 it a cheap buy but put it back. I found a 4000+ for 79.00 today on tigerdirect and thats a monster deal. Between the two I could downgrade and I bet my kids would never even realize it saving me about 221.00 dollars. I realize that a 4000+ is really a fx chip with locked mutlipliers . I know JC316 I was messing with you LOL!!!!

i would just leave the system the way it is ;o
unless you NEED an opteron 185 over an opteron 175 which i doubt
