i have been trying to set up a raid for a couple of hours now with sum luck but i dont think its right!!!!

i have a new mobo dfi rdx200 and i can setup the raid in bios and as far as i know i have done it right, i choose stripped raid 0 and then the rest is done on auto, i then going in2 xp setup and push f6 put the raid floppy in and select the right driver then is goes to the bit where is shows my drives, it only shows 1 which is good but it shows as 480gb??? they are two 250gb drives but i thought if i setup the raid in 0 then it should come up as 233bg or somthing??

can any1 tell me what i have done wrong???

cheers:toast:

if i am right , raid0 unites 2 drives to act as one stripping data between the two drives , and if thats the case what u r seeing is right 250 + 250 = 500 and it is showing u 480gb which is right then. because the setup is shwoing u 2 drives added together.

Thats right, don't worry. RAID 0 doesn't have redundancy, data is stored in alternate stripes on the drives, and you have full capacity of both drives. If you chose RAID 1 the data is duplicated on both drives, and this method halves the total capacity of the two drives.

Anyway, I thought you had got a CFX3200DR?

no i was going to get the CFX3200DR but i changed my order to get this one!!!

i am right in thinking that raid 0 is a performace increase yes??? and running xp in raid should improve performace and load times yes??

Oh, hope you like it, I don't have any problems with the CFX but I appreciate its not got a good reputation!

RAID 0 should help with load times and accessing files, won't make much difference to games as they tend to load everything they need to RAM.

yeh its not as good as the CFX3200DR from what i have seen but i got it cheap and thats why i ended up getting two drives and setting up this raid!!

cheers for the help guys!ill post some results soon

this is what i seem to have, looks ok 2 me!!!cant really seem to notice a difference but im hoping i will once i have loaded all my files on and got back to my old overclock, plus i think i may have used the wrong stripe sizes i used what was in the middle i cant remember i think it was 64

ok i thought my burst speeds were a little low so i started again and changed the stripe size to 16 and i got this result

You sure you have it set up correctly for SATA 300 ?

edit: My SATA2 drives get well over 220MB/s.

they are both sata2 drives however my on board controler is sata1, but i should still be able to get atleast 200 shouldnt i?

...No, 150MB/s will be your limit.

edit: or does RAID allow you to go higher? My drives arent set up in an array so i dont really know what the boost should be.

yeh i think its 150mb a channel so with two i should have a channel of 300 and if it was sata2 i would be 600!!! thats what i think anyway, but it doesnt explain why im only getting 124mb!!!!!!

what i dont understand is how a similar setup gets this result, i must have done somthing wrong???

Not sure if SATA2 would do 600 burst....here's what four SATA two drives managed, but then again I think my stripe size is outta whack too.

try running your stripe at 128 and see what the tach gives you

yeh i have now tried a strip at 128 and i still get the same burst speeds!!! doesnt make sence as the burst speeds were a lot lot higher when i was a single drive running!!!

Thats running a 128k stripe on mine.

i dont think the stripe size make much difference on the burst speeds does it?infact i think if anything a smaller stripe makes is higher normaly????

mine =sata1 2X80gb seagate cudas 7200.9 128 stripe size

16kb=low disk usage
64kb=typical usage
128kb= performance usage

i just cant get my head round how people have burst speeds of 300 or more when i have the same drives and similar mobo's ie dfi but i have the ati version!!!!

assume that you'v tried the 500gb in both sata plugs....and that you tried different cables
think i'll go read the manual :banghead:

what raid controler are you running the drives off of the ati sb or the Silicon Image
never mind i see that their on the Silicon Image mabe you should try them on the SB
