Benching Windows Vista

Well it's finally arrived on my PC, the RTM build of Windows Vista Business Edition...

so I just had to bench it and see just how much slower it is that Windows XP:

Pentium D805 @ 3.2GHz
ASUS P5WSD2-E Premium
1GB OCZ S.O.E PC2-6400 running at 640MHz
GeForce 7900GTO 512MB
160GB Samsung Spinpoint (XP)
80GB Samsung Spinpoint (Vista)

I've got XP running on one of my primary HDD's and Vista on the other one btw...

notes...
1. Looking at the "gadgets" Vista seems to occupy 51% of my 1GB of RAM when totally idle.
2. It hasn't been released to the public yet, so the graphics drivers are probably set to improve.
3. SpeedFan works with Vista :D
4. My friend embarrasingly noted that in MSN Live Messenger, by rolling up and down the contacts list you can get the CPU useage to 100%, and ramp up the temp of your processor significantly doing so.
5. Some new part of Vista is incompatible with my Netgear router, so I had to disable the "window size autotuning feature" to get MSN Live Working.
6. The registry seems to fuction very closely to XP, the keys seem to be unchanged for context menu's.
7. the Win32 API's inside XP that you can use when programming also seem to be unchanged.

Anyone tried to do these tests on 98 SE or Millenium. MAybe there tests will be faster

According to the latest headline at tomshardware.com, the ATI cards hold up much better on Vista that Nvidia's do - I can only hope that they release some better ones to coincide with the public launch on the 30th Jan...

surprised at that super pi time tho, 4 seconds faster in vista than xp? doesnt make sense compared to all the other benchies, also 51% of a gig of ram is absolutley ludicrous but then again m$ os have always been memory hogs

also i would expect your 3dmarks to get better with newer drivers, looks like all us 1gb mem ppl who want to upgrade to vista will also have to shell out on another gig of ram, thats just harsh

windows xp wasnt exactly enjoyable on 256meg either, wheras 98 was fine, also even at ddr(1)'s current inflated prices, 2gig is still cheaper than 512meg was on xp's release

If upgrading to a whole 2 gigs of RAM is going to be an issue, then upgrading to vista should be out of the question for you.

if you have 2gb ram vista will use 700+mb to "prefetch" programs it thinks you may want to use regularly, but heres the catch, if you run something it dosnt have catched guess what, it has to unload the catched crap from ram to make room for the program your wanting to use.

its not an issue dumass i was stating that the majority of pc users probably only have 1 gig or less and for the os to take up 700mb is a pisstake imo

ill prolly upgrade to 2 gigs long before i upgrade to vista anyway as this is a new build and i bought what i could afford

it would only take a couple of hours if you had a huge disk that hadnt been defragmented for quite some time, pretty much the same as xp

The vista defrag is terrible, It dosent even show progress or fragmented files on the drive. I guess the only way to know when it finishes is when the little circle stops ha.

im sure perfectdisk will come out for vista, but who cares, vista is t3h 3vil, and dx10 may endup having a "port" to nt5/5.1/5.2 as i have seen a few groups working on such a thing!!!
