I had 1 80gb hd and have recently bought another 80gb hd for storage (cause 80gb was cheap :P) and have put it on the same ide cable as the first hd as slave..

so i have 1 master hd and 1 slave hd on the first ide cable, and a dvd player by itself as master on the second ide cable, however im experiencing the occasional crash ever since iv installed the second hd, but i have found that if i unplugg the dvd player that is master on the 2nd ide cable the crashes stop..

do i have the right master/slave configs or should i set the DVD player to slave aswell even though its on a seperate IDE cable by itself? pls help!

Have you checked to make sure your PSU can handle all components? Check the Device Manager for conflicts. Also, recheck all connections and make sure they are 'right and tight'.

i think my psu can handle it but i could certainly do with a bigger one, but i really think its something to do with these master slave settings , i unplugged the slave hd so there is just 1 master hd on 1st ide cable and 1 master dvd on 2nd ide cable, im guessing i need to set the dvd to slave even though its on a seperate ide cable as i got another crash..

Recheck the Jumpers on the slave and also check the jumpers on the master. I have a HDD that has about 10 different jumper settings and is confusing as heck. Took me a couple trys to get it right.

hrmm ok i dont really know how set the jumpers

i just assumed you plug it in and designate it as master or slave, is there some physical settings i need to change, ie-jumpers?

There should be a sticker on the HDD that shows where to place the Jumpers on the back of the drive. The jumpers are small plastic blocks with a metal clip in them to connect two pins. They have to connect the correct pins to designate the Master/slave set up. You will have to remove the drives to read the label with this information.

ok thanks, iv just set the jumpers to the indicated positons on top of the hd's..

i have set 1 hd(the one with OS on it) as master and the other hd (empty for storage) as slave both on the first ide cable, and the dvd player as slave on the second ide cable with no master on the 2nd ide cable. i disabled auto cable select in bios and set them all manually..

does that sound right? hopefully that does the trick.

If you only have one dvd drive it can stay master. The dvd's are on a different i/o than the HDD's.

In bios can you set HDD configuration , priority. Also i've not noticed any one say anything about IDE /master-slave placement (i believe this would apply if no bios config. are avalable)
On most IDE2 ribbons the need for a jumper in singal drive set up is omitted (you dont need it)
