I plan on staying with XP for a while, I don't like to change OS's often, and never change until most of the bugs are worked out. I figure that will take a couple years.

Wait awhile, and then possibly get it, and dual boot. IF they get the DRMand HD content issues sorted, otherwise, no dice.

Hold off until the "bugs" AND full applications compatibility (like drivers utilizing wares (e.g. - AntiVirus progs, etc.)) shake out of it, most likely, as far as home usage...
Probably the same in work related environs most likely.
It's RARE imo & experience to see companies just "flip over immediately" to a new variety of Operating System, because if they have a 'watch that runs', it's rare to see instant change in those environs as well, even w/ new machines they may get w/ it preinstalled.
Downtime is NOT good. I'll probably stick around doing coding for awhile rather than networking type jobs, & that testing's usually done by network techs/admins mostly imo, rather than coders.
AT most, in corporate environs, you get some testing done first... seeing how the OS 'meshes' w/ the network & in-house custom-built applications, etc.
Heck - I just saw the movement from Windows 2000 to Windows XP really 'take' in corporate environs mostly in 2005-2006 mostly, some folks did go to XP in 2003-2004 though, but not as many as they did later.
Would I like to run it right away? Yes, & NO... I like how it looks, & the security stuff in it that IS better on quite a few levels, but I DO NOT LIKE WHAT I SEE/HEAR/READ on "DRM" & also the OpenGL vs. DirectX 10 lunacy!
Why 'cripple' it, as Microsoft has? IMO, to avoid hassle w/ INTEL & HOLLYWOOD (any multimedia entertainment entity really)...

Once drivers are sorted out, and everything isn't beta, and I get my copy from work, I'll swap... Dual Boot as Steevo said, as I do when when I'm switching a O/S. Once I start to not use my old O/S, I'll just make Vista my primary. I've been using Vista RC2 for a while now, and I like it, but it's just beta drivers and limited software that stops me from using it more.

 Nahhhhhh, XP is okay...98SE was pretty cool. But Mac OSX is THE best for me. I wish I had a Mac G5 :(

Once I have a 64-bit processor I'll buy it, I don't want to buy the 32-bit version and have to buy the 64-bit a year later. Then I'll check and see if the software I want to use is available and working, and all of the drivers I need are stable.

I've never really bothered to look into the difference between 32 bit and 64 bit OS's....What is the difference?

I've never really bothered to look into the difference between 32 bit and 64 bit OS's....What is the difference?
Mainly "addressability of memory": I.E.-> HOW MUCH they can access & use... 4gb = 32-bit limit, & 64-bit is TONS more.
Question is? How much RAM do you need to do 99% of what YOU do, such as word-processing or web-browsing for instance?? I have YET to see a 4gb Word Doc for instance.
I don't need it, most folks don't (yet, w/ current apps, imo)... what DOES need & use it though, are systems like HUGE "industrial strength" database engines (e.g.-> Oracle, SQLServer, DB/2, etc. et al).
Nowadays? 4gb is NOT THAT BIG in terms of datasets out there, especially in the financial & insurance environs I've worked in...
APK
P.S.=> Have I heard that 64-bit Windows performs better/runs faster than 32-bit ones? YES, I have... but, do I have apps that are natively 64-bit, for all of the tools I use?? NO!
This transition type, is a pain... I remember going from 16-bit DOS/Win3.x to Windows9x &/or NT 3.5x & waiting out apps I liked (especially database programs like Access, which I was learning then for work), & it was a LONG wait... I didn't LIKE IT, not @ all... apk

GREEK - offer us your thoughts/feelings/opinions on it please... I value "hands-on experience" based opinions, massively!
:)
* Just your overall thoughts (especially on AERO GLASS :) ) & how it runs w/ your current applications & also your experience on apps that use/need to have drivers (.sys) files &/or services daemons underneath them to run right (e.g. - AntiVirus programs, defraggers, etc.)
Thanks!

OK, well first thoughts, Quick Installation, faster than Previous O/S's i have tried (XP, 2000Pro)
to format a drive is a bit weird as it does it so quick, and i dnt think it does it properly, ill explain later.
Booted up just find, the gr8 thing was that all my hardware was rexognized and the drivers were installed for them and was ready to do what i wanted, obviously i went and got more up to date but never the less a gd starting help shud i say.
installing apps is the same, fast and very easy to do.
Tried to install alcohol 120% as i do a lot of doggy crap, and BSOD after restart , i knew MS had disable the virtual drive feature and alcohol 120% wudnt work but i like to try for ma self.
so then cz i cudnt stop BSOD it always kept happening reinstalled again, 20 maybe 25 minutes to reinstall.
Windows Aero is sweet looking and i like it a lot, i added gadget etc and not much differene to the speed of things.
the first thing you will notice is the UAC message which requires you to have admnistrative privilages to run prograsms etc, so i disabled it as it was getting very annoying.
I installed vent, bf2, NFS carbon and patched them,
BTW: installing and batching BF2 is very slow, slower than xp for sum reason.
now the thing about the format.... i run bf2 for the first time and taraaaaaaaa my login details were still there! hmmm so no proper format then, i did go back and try formatting a diff way but still same thing happen.
The same with Carbon, but with that it cudnt find ma saved games only knew that i had saved a progress on that game,.
carbon wont run unless u rename the movies folder on the install dir.
In Vista you have to run most things as admin or they wont run properly i.e push to talk key in vent wudnt work if u had an app opened and on it. i.e internet explorer or a game.
s u had to run as admin.
COD2 worked fine.
I've found that vista is high demanding in in new hardware and gd processor and ram, curently when logging in it acuiries around 700-800MB of ram and goes down to 600 when nothing else needs to load.
games run smoothly although i can see the 15% slower that microsoft had revealed prior to their relelease of their rtm.
I did used NOD32 as my anti-virues but removed it cz i felt like it no particular reason rele, as for firewall i dnt use one as im behind a router and feel that thats secure enough.
u need at least 2gb of ram to run vista smoothly, loggin in is fast.
i like the rating system ( i get 5.2)
anywayz if u have more question let me no.
ps> dnt use alcohol, run daemon tools only if u want to run images.
here is a screenshot of vista on ma machine.

Booo for vista... (I don't care if I'm slandering!).
Its so horribly unstable compared to XP and is so limited. Everything just got 100 times slower, how does it look better than the normal XP OS anyway? Just do a quick re-skin and it will look better than vista.

I'm probably gonna multi boot until such a time that all the bugs and issues are worked out of Vista. I posted this somewhere else too, but I'm multi booting a Vista Ultimate trial right now. I used vLite to disable/remove some of the more resource hogging features and services. Windows Search, Windows Defender, the performance test, System Restore, and some others. Vista actually loads most of my programs faster than xp, and seems faster in day to day basic usage, but it still chokes on the more resource hungry apps. Install only took about 35-40 min, from first boot of the disk to the desktop. (Performance test seemed to cause most of the install time.) Once the issues are worked out, and once somebody figures out a way to disable all the drm crap, I'll completely switch to Vista. Until then, It's multi boot for me.

I'm multi booting Vista Business and XP. There are no Audigy 2 drivers for Vista so I wont be using it much :ohwell:
:edit: Looks like creative recently released a driver. No EAX support, but if it does 5:1 I may be using Vista a lot more.

i've been using the rtm since its launch, its installation was lot faster than XP ONLY 13 minutes wow. But Gaming in Xp is definitely faster. But if ya have DX10 cards and no Vista its the lousiest thing to do ;)
But no worries there's plenty of time since dx10 games except crysis are out. until then XP Rules !!! ( In Dx9, that is lol :D )

I voted other because I am going to milk XP dry and then make the switch. I did the same thing with 98, I used it until Doom3 stopped support for 98 and then I jumped over to XP, same thing I will do here.

put it this way, its probably going to be the only os i have bought, not straight away but maybe at the end of this year when hopefully quite a few bugs will be ironed out and when the price comes down a bit either by way of an upgrade or fleabay as i will be moving to dx10 gaming poss late next year, why not ?

why not ?The only 2 reasons I can think of are: integrated drm, and the need for lots of ram. Otherwise, I actually like it.
