Hey, Im taking my computer to school at the end of my holidays for my final year of high school. This year i have to create a major work of art, which, of course i am doing on computer with the lovely assistance of photoshop.

My good computer (E6400, X1950 Pro, 2gb dr-800) stays at home.
Anyway, my question is. How the hell do I stop people from kicking in my case, smashing the LCD, stealing hardware (especially peripherals) when Im not around?

The only Idea i could think of is a steel toolbox and a nice padlock for when its not in use.

Can anyone help me think of anything? :ohwell: Preferably something cheap, but sturdy.

Wiring the system up to a 20 thousand volt security system also appeals to me, but this could be both expensive and make me quite liable for lawsuits :p

Toolbox is a good idea, espically if you can secure it to a solid object so it cant be moved. I have <---- that as a security system, but he is expensive and smells horrible.

hahah

the only problem is

Get the football team to guard it for ya. Or lock it in a storeroom.

How big is it? Something like a plastic tacklebox might work as well, those things are tough as nails.

we dont have a football team as we are Australian
Football over here is known as soccer (the english call soccer football, and seeing to as they invented football, i guess they are right.)

And if i was to leave it to half of the people in my school that play football, it would dissapear before i could blink twice. Footballers here are usually assholes :).

and as for the storage room

well the place i want to leave it is pretty out of the way, but its upstairs, and wide open. It would require me carrying it upstairs and downstairs every day if i wanted to put it in the store room...which is a waste of time when you consider that an art lesson only lasts for 45 to 90 minutes.

Its a standard case approx 20cm deep by 40cm high by 50 cm long

maybe wrapping the whole thing in duct tape would deter them lol

Stick it in an old Mac case, then no one will touch it :D. Other than that.. the padlock seems like your best bet.. as for the LCD maybe one of those protective plastic monitor covers?

Mac cases tend to be thrown from verrrrry high buildings :D
But it was a good idea :p

dammit...if only people were normal
living would be so much cheaper

do you think anything would break if the case got kicked?
I can envision my cpu ripping off the board with the heavy copper cooler on it.
Falling straight on my old but great x800

not that im worried...my main concern is the lcd because that thing would just shatter like crystal glass

its the same everywhere mate

in australia we have a saying
"theres an idiot in every bunch"
and its pretty true

probably a result of widespread, unchecked immigration since the 1940's

i had 4 SLI'd 8800's didnt I pt :p

itd be awesome if i could build/put all my hardware into a briefcase. I know its been done before.

Then id only have to worry about carrying a monitor or something simple.

Install the lcd panel in the side of the case.

dimensions speak louder than the photo will do justice

also...the price?

a few companies make things like this...

http://www.loxit.com/cpctower.htm#loxcase130

and ive seen ones that are very sturdy when on a 'back to work' course a few years ago (to protect it from smackheads and the like)

ex_reven
01-25-2007, 10:01 PM
they look excellent.
especially the one with the sliding door

but since theyr made for specified purposes im going to guess that their cost is unreasonably high. this computer is pretty old and probably isnt worth that kind of cost lol.

but if i can find one of those for a good price itd be my number one choice
with the steel briefcase/box second
toolboxes are $450:eek:

yeah i wanted my dad to give me one (he has several)
but he needs all of them for his workers and himself
:(

and i cant buy one, those things are damn expensive...especially the high quality ones

I might drop into the hardware store in a few days and see if they have something more affordable. Blowing money on something im only gonna use once (even if i could sell it) is just pointless. Especially with my limited income.

Damn they kick nicely.

But yeah i can hardly take it to school lol.
And besides, why shoot when you can inflict so much more pain by biting through their throat, pulling their spinal cord out and playing it like a xylophone :D. The addition of spinal fluid spraying everywhere to deter future thieves/vandals also works :D

id love to mod one.

01-26-2007, 12:06 AM
Yep, balance is superb. Very stable, too. In full auto, it barely wants to ride up on you. Far better in that respect than the other full auto guns I have shot. AR-15, M16, SKS, AK47, Thompson. The Thompson was by far the hardest to handle, btw.

Im not a fan of any of those guns.
I mean the AK-47 and its subsequent good models eg the AK-50 and AK-74 all had a great design process. They were cheap and FAST to manufacture, especially back then.
Theyr even reliable enough that you could drop them, throw them, dirty them drown them in mud and they still dont encounter many issues or even magazine feed problems.
But they dont quite instill a great sense of style either.

Like the MP5, HK makes alot of other good models. Like the G-36. That would be interesting to try out. Reminds me of the Steyr rifles our army uses.

just remember that your going to want good airflow in your case, you could o with some kind of animal crate and put a pad lock on it.

i also have a problem with computer security, in our computer tech class we use the schools machines and install one or two games on the (for break time), but lately people have been ass's and have gotten onto each others pc and have changes all the settings arround, deleted importand content, etc. Anyone here know of a program i could download to completely lock the computer (next to windows key+l). We technically arent alowed to change any settings arround on the administrators acounts, so changing the password is going to get one in deep trouble (everyone has the same) so by using windows key + L is pointless. the teacher in that class wont care, all he says is get off the computers, even if he has to say it 50 times, he never takes any action... the people in that class are retards, they break things on purpose, total duggies that take the class just for the games, not the computer skills, so they dont care about any consequences... in short is there any program i could put on a flash drive that could completely lock down a computer, (for example a password that doesnt relate to the user password), and that is free? Thanks....

ex_reven
01-26-2007, 02:29 AM
In terms of airflow, the storage devce i keep my computer in wont be holding the computer when i run it. But anyway.

Heres a link to a program that locks your folders

This one is free i think...it said free download

Hope that helps

I don't know how good you are with wood working, but you could build a case fairly cheap.

Get a sheet of 1/2" plywood, have two sides, a front, a back, a bottom and a hinged lid. All in all, it should cost you around $20 bucks and it should do perfectly.
