7900gs temperature

My XFX 7900gs extreme idles at 56deg and 78deg when under load, is that normal, seems a bit high?

That is normal for the 7900GS, the stock cooler was really designed for a 7600 series, so it is really underpowered. IMO, it barely gets the job done.

Gainward doesn't use the stock cooler on their cards.
