So,

My mom has a dell inspiron 5100 notebook with 2x256 ddr pc2100. i Was thinking of getter her a 1x1gb ddr pc2700 and sticking one of the other 256mb chips in it with it. this will work right? is all ram dual channel if it's is matched correctly? Would i be better off getting her 2x512?

it wont run in dual channel with a 1gb and 256mb they have to be the same size, speed etc so personally i would go for the 2x512mb afterall if its your moms laptop shes not gonna need that xtra 256 anyway is she ? 1 gb should suffice for most users except gamers and enthusiasts

the kingston maybe the better choice of the 2 as some people have said the gskill is not compatible in some laptops, you could check the manufacturer and see wether they have any known compatibility problems, if not it could be pot luck.
