My buddy (CamH773) brought his rig over and has had me reinstall windows etc to try to clean up his system. He has a weird issue with his MX518 lagging or hitching while moving the mouse, along with no ability to overclock. Does anyone have an idea of how to resolve this issue??? I have the comp in my possession for the next day or so and i need to fix it. We have nearly identical rigs so I will be part swapping to try to find the problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Specs: Asus A8N-E rev 2.0, Sapphire x1800xt 256mb, crucial ballistix pc3200, AMD 3200+, WD 320gb sata2 hdd, sunbeam 540w psu.

Did you try another mouse? could be dirty optical or a bad surface. Does it do it will all usb ports...try ps/2.

for overclocking you have to enable floppy disk in bios even if not installed

Hmm...well right now i have the bios completly at default except for the vdimm at 2.8v. im going to reformat the hard drive as that might have been causing the issues (it was orignally partitioned and i just formatted one partition). i hope a complete format will solve the cpu spike issue.

I'm assuming you've cleared the CMOS? What happens in safe mode?

I would suspect a software problem, but you never know. Could be a background app going wrong, but the overclocking has to be BIOS related to some extent.
