Hi this might be a silly questions and im sure ill get a very quick answer but if i am going to run my motherboard of of the casing, for example on my desk then how would i start it up as the power switch is fixed to the case? would i need to link that in some how?

just use a screw driver to touch the pins that start it.

i thought about doing the same thing while i was waiting on my case being delivered lol (damn im inpatient :p ), although i would not reccomend it at all unless you are totally sure you know what you are doing even then i wopuldnt because of risk of damage to your components, because know matter how prepared we all are, accidents do happen, its just a plain bad idea i think especcially on your desk lol, what are you doing it for anyway ?
there is one way i can think of turning it on anyway, go into the bios and set it so you can turn your pc on with your keyboard or mouse, then just press the power key on your keyboard or diouble click your mouse and voila :o (still not reccomended lol)

I do an "table top" build ANY time I'm making a new system (don't want to get everything in the case to find out the motherboard is bad or something like that)
Locate the PWR header jumper on the motherboard (the one that connects to your case switch). Plug in and turn on the PSU. Take a knife or screwdriver and CAREFULLY short the two pins (and just breifly). What you are doing at that point is the exact same thing as the power switch on your case. To shut down, go through normal windows or PSU switch/cord.

Thanks ill try that, i've decided to do it on my wooden floor instead of my desk though. I need to do it because im jsut building up my pc and everything seems to wrok fans come on and disk drive works etc but i get know sound i took out the drives etc and took out the ram to see if i get a beep but nothing. Now ive read it could be something to do with my case maybe touching the motherboard or something.

if everything works what sounds are you looking for ? see if you have a speaker plugged into the mobo if you are on about motherboard bleeps.

Yes, I should have added to my post that you should be doing it on something completely NON-CONDUCTIVE, and make sure that any exposed electronics aren't touching HDD cases, etc.
Make sure to give yourself plenty of space. And don't get really drunk first (that's usually my mistake).

does your pc work as it should, boot up into windows etc ? if so you shouldnt hear any beeps from your motherboard speaker anyway thats there to let you know if there are any errors.
or are you saying you have no sound in windows ? if thats also fine i dont quite understand your reasoning sorry :wtf:

have you checked you have your graphics card inserted correctly, also check and recheck ALL cables, if you have onboard graphics make sure you disable them in the bios and set it to boot from pci-e/agp whichever is applicable

Thanks for the help, i couldn't get it working last night so took it into work with me and within ten minutes found out i'd not inserted a power lead i needed. It's all up and working now and have just installed vista after installing xp because of the way the microsoft update discs now work.
