hello all im currently using EPox 9NPA+ultra mobo with AMD 64 3500, im looking to upgrade the CPU to AMD opteron 170 dual core. but im not sure if my motherboard supports it or not.

i check the mobo web site it didnt say anything about supporting Opteron. but i notice alot of people who use MSI or DFI even ASUS none server mobo being able use that CPU.

so if anyone have experience using this board with this cpu please let me know.

also my friend told me most of Opteron CPU require Register Rams. and im not sure what type of ram is register for Opteron. im currently running OCZ platnium 2gb Dual channel

That opteron you want, wont need registered ram (ECC Ram as its referred too). In fact, if your board is a S939, it should work in it, all it would need at most is a bios update. ECC Ram is more expensive that regular DDR ram and its used mainly in servers (for business and such) for checking errors and bits and such. Your ram will work with the Opty 1XX series of processors.
