View Full Version : Aero's process :D

Aero glass interace is controlled by dwm.exe process, cuz i ended it and glass dissapeared.
35 mb ram is consumed by this process, ending it will give 35mb free.

do you have any info on how much memory other stuff in vista uses?
eg - do programs like wmp stay the same? or are they affected by vista?

then how does ending a process affect aero ??

WMP eats only 15-17mb ram on my pc.

If 35MB is all it uses it's rather light, compare it to certain bloated chat clients for example.

how much would the difference between max performance and maximum visual appeal on XP be? and what process does that come under? explorer.exe?

It's really not all that much, should not really make a difference.

photoshop uses ~200mb for a typical 52mb scanned image

But with 4 gb of ram (which we will all have soon) it is only less than 1% of the usage.

wth?
how is 200mb 1% of 4000mb :p?
and then you need to realise that photoshop can start leeching more than a gig of ram on large images.
EDIT - or were you talking about the windows interface?

i just keep aero running,i have 2gb and it dont seem to slow it down that much, plus it suspends it when you play a game.

Your computer would do well with vista. Mine not so much.

give it a try,ex raven if you can get hold of it.it seems alot of people are trying it and like it.
up to now,its been as stable as xp was for me.

imo 35MB for nothing more than merely a windows skin is a bit top-heavy.

in Xp whole shell is embedded into a single process explorer.exe, but in vista 1st shell is aero, 2nd is the transparent glass.

and yes, this is just the glass thing. not the AERO UI. the live thumbnails, smooth windows, no flickering, no edges in windows, and the animation effects fully comprise the full aero interface but ppl don't seem to get it , they think the eye candy glass thingy is the aero ui. how silly..

This is JUST the kind of 'research' that needs doing by the folks that run VISTA imo... in order to learn how to 'pare it down/tune it' for better performance (using less memory & cpu cycles via services cut offs)...
Much as is starting to be done here by Jimmy2004 in this thread:
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=24912
:)
* This type of 'fooling around' can determine what the new services in VISTA can do, & what they affect IF they are turned off, etc. et al...

the dwm process only consumes the max 35-40 mb ram, but others seem to consume pretty less. hmm, the searchindexer.exe (as the name tells) is the indexing engine of Vista, which helps finding stuff through quick searches. so, i personally recommend this to be left on.
Also, there is no other heavy process.

You ought to "pitch in" in the thread I noted above - Jimmy2004, yourself, & other VISTA users can come up w/ a HELL of a lot of knowledge on how to tune this Operating System for the utmost in CPU cycles & Memory usage, via services cutoffs for starters, & then later seeing how many of the optimizations for 2000/XP/Server 2003 work (like reghacks).

Regarding "DRM" & the "OpenGL vs. DirectX 10" issue, I'd be inclined to agree - but, that doesn't mean we have to stop trying to learn more about it I guess...
:)
* I don't even OWN or USE it, yet that is, but do eventually intend to... so, trying to "get a jumpstart on that learning", now is all...

the main reasons i got are-
1.its inevitable
2.i actually like the look of it.
3.if i get it now,i will know how to use it,before my mates do.
4.when dx10 is sorted all i need is a mid range r600/8x00 and i'm set.instead of a reinstall.

Reasons not to get now:
Expensive
Unstable
Slow
Viruses
Slow
Your computer will cough up blood
SP1 coming out will be good
DX10 not yet out
Slow

well it certainly is'nt unstable.mine has'nt crashed or froze locked/up once.its not expensive £79 for oem is very good i think, and i dont think its slow either, all my games run as good as they did on xpee(lol)
