I'm nearly done with my c2d build and since I won't be getting vista just yet, i'd debating whether to install XP pr0 x32 or x64

I know some of the initial memory issues of x64 have been resolved - are there any other compatibility issues, particilarly with gaming, ATI gfx cards and other hardware/software that anyone has had?

Will x64 give a noticable performance increase over x32 with a e6400 (will OC soon)

Since i've used Xp64 w/ C2d, i can tell u this. 64bit gaming has always been better and faster than 32bit (until vista). So, Xp64 is the choice ;) Also, drivers are greatly available than b4, so go get it :D

Well I don't know so much about a performance upgrade... The only part of your system that will be 64bit is the OS... A c2d is not a 64bit chip, but a 32bit chip with 64bit support, which is really kinda funny and means next to nothing *performance wise*.. So unless XP x64 is all around a faster OS you will see no difference.

But be warned of driver support issues with 64bit XP

It is worth a shot though... Can't hurt to try it out.

For that reason alone, I'd stay with mainstream x32... unless you have some compelling task or reason to go with x64.

XP x64 has the newer kernel which Server 2003 is built on, it's much better, less buggy and smoother. Driver issues are no where near what they used to be, and from what I've read you can force XP to use x86 drivers if absolutely neccesary.

As niko said, it can't hurt to try it out.

i've been using x64 os for a very long time, and also c2d can run x64 pretty well...
PROPER drivers are now available for most of the hardware, except some ATK acpi smthing..

thx for the replies

I've got a standard XPpro install disk and a x64 disc (free university software ftw!)

I suppose the procedure is to install XP and then update to x64?

No, x64 is a different os and can't run or be updated from 32bit xp.
good luck ;)
