View Full Version : Cut me a pass today & past 2-3 days now guys, IF I seem like I am in a 'bad mood'
Alec§taar

Because I have been, & have been VERY 'negative' on things lately...
:)
* So, just write it off to my being moody... I took a peek @ some of my posts, & the "Sheer Negativity" coming out of me today & the past 2-3 days or so, just made me disgusted in myself, so sorry to all who have read some of my latest posts is all.
(It's not me ordinarily, imo @ least (well, I can be a negative bastard @ times admittedly) - it's that a LOT of things money/work related piled up, & got resolved MOSTLY today (which is why I was such a hothead to folks I know in 'real life' today))
Still, all of it took tons of effort!
When I got home, more came up, lol... "when it rains it pours"...
Setting up & bridging a DSL router into my LinkSys NAT firewalling router was a MAJOR HASSLE/PAIN too, nothing like the EASE of doing CableModem hookups using Motorola Surfboard cablemodems + LinkSys routers... bridging & PPoE b.s. settings galore & testing!
(Then, lastly, BOTH my tenant (and MY furnace too, same unit) & my grandmother both said their furnaces were out, & was only pilot light on Grandma's but for tenant, it shit the bed (goodbye tons of cash))
Ah, wtf!!! Lots @ once in 1 day is all!
So, if I was a dork to anybody the past couple days? Please... cut me a pass as the saying goes. The discussions about VISTA & "DRM" etc. didn't help, but truly ARE the "least of my problems" right now - still, they did add to it.
I don't like seeing GREAT things, go bad/deteriorate in anyway... especially Windows, as it has come a HUGE distance since I first used it in 16-bit days!
* Thanks!
APK
P.S.=> You know what? I thought about it a few minutes ago, & my legs aren't broken, my head isn't chopped off, I don't have HERPES or AIDS, etc., so... how bad could it be, right?
WELL, Hey - it's not!
It's just a LOT of personal negativity coming out of me today & THE PAST 2-3 DAYS OR SO on my part, imo @ least!
(Fact is, today? Well, I made formal apologies to several friends today in fact because of it, for 'snapping @ them' on the phone, including my father as well (this I felt the most rotten of all today about in fact) & guess I am issuing one here today too)... apk

Hey, I wouldn't worry about it, no infractions/bans that I know of, so it's all good. Everyone has that ONE bad week where everything is in the shitter, I had mine a couple of months ago. I got to destroy an already destroyed car with my bare hands for relief.

I haven't noticed, but maybe that's because I have stuff to deal with myself...
I got gum recession at 16 years old, require $4000 worth of surgery to get grafts. Personally, I think we should figure out what's causing it before spending that kind of cash to fix it. And our insurance only covers $2000 of the surgery....wtf is with that? The sole reason we can't replace the slowly dying Darth Flatulence (memory controller issues, or SOMETHING hidden) is because of all the cash we have to drop into my mouth. Ugh...I could go on about this for a LONG time. It's going to hurt, it's going to be expensive, it's SURGERY, I'm not even sure if it'll actually solve the problem, and I'm not supposed to be worried about my adult teeth falling out until I'm like 60... how embarrassing. And even then, insurance SHOULD have us covered...isn't that why we pay ridiculous amounts of money, so that when shit like this happens it's PAID IN FULL???

The main company F**ked up one of their firewalls and it let tons of NetBios bradcasting through for a couple hours, causing all of their machines to go haywire and our systems to drop connections to our servers. We share a few select IP's for ease of communication, and since we are ran through a few NAT devices, I just kept the scheme of IP's to make my job easier and eleminate another piece of hardware.
With all the gratuitous ARP packets flooding in only the permanent published IP to MAC machines stayed stable, and as I couldn't get machines registered when their IP was in use a thousand miles away (AT&T being the data carrier, and not filtering any of this either) and every time I dumped the ARP cache they would re register before I got a chance to re associate the correct IP to MAC address in our system, and that was causing problems for them. Something to the tune of three servers going offline and about 15 workstations.
I called and told them their nuts were hanging out and at first they didn't believe me, so I started flooding all the IP's with a shit load of generated traffic (this actually caused their servers and workstations to go berzerk) Low and behold.
They gave.

Well, I am TRYING to be more cheerful today, because I did solve a few problems on the work/money front, & on the INTERNET connectivity thing (DSL -> LinkSys router PPoE bridging b.s. I complained about above, it wasn't THAT tough, but was for first time having to go @ it)
Compared to Steevo's "mess" above? IT WAS CAKE!
Yes, more than ever, I am convinced cablemodem is better, easier to setup on ALL fronts w/ Cablemodem routers @ least, but I don't think those need to be bridged, because they're NOT "NAT" iirc... & cablemodem internet IS faster, no questions asked.
(However - but using DSL saves me some cash this year is all, & I get to learn more about it - trying to be POSITIVE here).
BUT, the furnace going out is major cash possibly, & hassle for tenant below too... NOT JUST ME, my PC keeps me warm(er), lol!
Thing is, up here in NY State tonite, it's like - 20 F outside... SUB-ZERO!
(This is the major one, but it WILL work out somehow (time to light up fireplace for tonite I think, haven't in ages in this house, but here goes nothing))
Anyhow - things have a way of working out, & this will too. Thanks for listening people, I really needed to "VENT" today, & some of that 'venting' on my part today was way too negative!
(Over VISTA & DRM of all things... sheesh!)

@zek...
gum recession is often caused by a combination of:
1./ stress
2./ too little sleep
3./ too much caffine
4./ too much alcohol
5./ no enough greens and too much meat based junk food
6./ no enough water (too many sugar/acid drinks)
7./ smoking
8./ hormonal changes and not enough sex
I had it. A friend had it. But neither of us needed dental surgury.
We basically cut a regime to solve 1-8 and it worked for us.
Try it before spending a fortune. 3 Months. You'll see.

Alec§taar, Where in NY are you?
Not far - what? 2-2.5 hrs. TOPS, in Syracuse?? It's where I am from originally, but the past decade it's been mostly (still is a lot too though) travelling for work.
I used to work for GOULDS PUMPS as a programmer, not far from you, for a couple years in the mid to late 90's (1994-1995) before I left for Atlanta Ga. circa late 1995-2000 - Seneca Falls, in fact (near Geneva on the way to YOU)!
Great company by the way - I'd put them into my TOP 3 of all time for great companies to work for by the way. It's one of those ones you feel like it was "the fish that got away", great place, great people (especially the mgt., best I have EVER worked for in this field no lie), solid company/Fortune 500, etc.
Rochester, I am kind of familiar with it, had roommates in college from there (Fairport, Irondequoit, Brighton, etc.), nice too... used to ROCK, for this field, in the 90's iirc.
I am "home visiting" this year, but, that is about it. On to the south again, shortly (w/ Spring most likely!)
The amounts of job opportunities seem better down there in THIS field lately:
Syracuse, & much of the Northeast, imo (except NY City, always BOOMING, but pay doesn't keep up well w/cost of housing there, it is INSANE - broomclosets for $2000 & up a month (thats more than most mortgages)) seems to be 'dying' on the IT front for job opportunities imo (picked up some the past 2-3 yrs. now, but is slow again, imo).
I am in Rochester and brother it is figginn cold here, Rochester is right on Ontario lake!! Not only sub-zeroish but also like advisory snow storm till morning:rockout: Bring it on ,My pathfinder can handle most anything Jack frost has;)
We're getting the SAME weather - BAD COLD! I lived in N.Y. City for MOST all of 2003 (some was in Alabama for work), & part of 2004 (not much), & here is one of the times I miss it... their winters are MELLOW!
Here, we are on water too, & get "lake effect snow", but it's TOO COLD to snow even, as I am sure you are aware of (Onondaga Lake, one of the most polluted bodies of water in the USA in fact, is w/ in eyeshot of me here).
:(
I think this extreme coldwave has knocked my furnace almost DEAD OUT...
E.G.-> I am having to continually (well, every couple hours now) 'manually redetonate it' via the 'pilot light valve' (not sure what the part is, but it's what I used to torch the pilot light before) & it seems to get it to work, but it's almost like my thermostat on it for it to run by itself (part that talks to the stuff you use to adjust it on the walls in your house) are dead... weird!
The pilot light's on, but its like the thermostat relays are not 'talking' to the furnace... old school ones too, lol, (NO "IP CONNECTIVITY" & I wish it had that, lol, as I could probably figure THAT out, pure analog electrical stuff I think).

I even feel better now, lol, because of the teeth stuff above (Z, good luck on that, health's that 1 thing you can't mess w/ man, & I didn't mean to make light of your misfortune by saying that stuff gave me a laff, especially when applied to MYSELF!)... apk

Yea, Kodak... it was the MAIN employer in Rochester, for decades in fact, iirc!
One of my bosses from years ago's father retired from there & made a killing to boot... big money, long term opportunity, but then again - stuff was diff. 'back in the olden days'. Things HAVE changed (you know it, I know it, everyone KNOWS it).
SOME THINGS I READ @ SLASHDOT TODAY, THAT I KEPT, IN REGARDS TO THIS VERY THING YOU SPEAK OF, & I AGREE 110% WITH (yes, a bit more negativity, but have to let it out & vent on it)
The goal used to be to make money. Now the goal is to make as much money as possible. Though those seem like similar goals, in reality they aren't. Before, as long as you were making money then you could, with a good conscience, treat your employees well. Now, no matter how much money you're making, you still can't treat your employees well and feel good about it, because every cent spent on human decency is a cent of profit squandered. Also, many companies of old felt that they had a responsibility to their workers, whereas now workers are viewed as an expense, like paper clips or toilet paper. This attitude makes for a hotter stock price, but a worse quality of life for everyone who works there.
Also, CEO pay has skyrocketed in comparison to worker pay, and no company that pays hundreds of millions of dollars to departing executives can also afford to be loyal and supportive to the workers. In the corporate culture of today, executives are seen as the movers and shakers, the visionaries who create the value, while the workers are seen as expenses.
Today, companies are more concerned with cutting another 10,000 employees so their stock price will jump a few cents for a couple of weeks than creating a relationship of trust and security with their employees. Benefits are cut, unions are fought, jobs shipped overseas and life is generally made as miserable as possible for the people who sweat blood on the shop floor. Meanwhile, the differential between what the CEO makes compared to the average employee has gone from 20 to 1 to 20,000 to 1.
I'm not surprised that corporations find themselves loathed by their employees and having to exert effort and money trying to protect themselves from their own people. What surprises me is that we don't see more all-out sabotage by disgruntled employees.
It's not coincidental that the period of enormous growth and prosperity of the few decades after World War II happened to also be a period of improving conditions, organization and influence for the workers. A period when labor unions were considered a crucial part of the economic system. Those unions were the only reason the US had such a strong and deep middle class from 1950 until their demise began at the hands of that doddering tool of the Right-Wing Rich, Ronald Reagan, who, if God is just, is burning in Hell.
Banks have also gone out of business due to the insider threat people seem afraid to discuss. There's an old saying, "The best way to rob a bank is to own one". Crooked senior management stole one Sagan (billions and billions) of dollars during the 1980s US savings and loan disaster. Sometimes the thefts are even considered legal, as when a CEO walks away from a ruined company with a hundred million in "performance bonuses". How is ESM going to protect against Ken Lay, who did more damage than any random thousand "disgruntled former employees"? (*)
This world no longer has great men, but instead committees.

P.S.=> Personally? I believe it's NOT so much mgt. (@ least lower to mid tiers) that's the problem...
I think it comes from the StockMarket personally!
IMO, @ least - it's turned businesses into 'playing cards' in stockholders portfolios, & nothing more.
(NO - Not a bad thing, when viewed from the individual stockholder's viewpoint (they have a right to earn money for money they basically LENT a corporate body), but BAD, when Enron fiascos & worse go down (the stuff you describe @ KODAK is an example of that))...
Anyhow - thought I would share those quotes from SLASHDOT tonite w/ you all - I do agree with them largely, but HOW TO CURE IT? I don't think it CAN be cured, not w/ how things run today @ least...
