The rules of this thread are:
1./ Everybody may enter :)
2./ Calculate the NEXT NUMBER in the fibonacci series and post it :pimp:
3./ No posting of comments in the thread, unless you post the next fibonacci number first
4./ No double postings without someone else posting in-between
If you dont know what the next number is  , go
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibonacci_series
By April 1 we will see how far we got, and calculate Phi (golden ratio) using only the last two numbers in the series, go
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio
Thanks for participating! :toast:

Thanks for the offer Therm... but that's not the point. It's a maths & philosophy experiment. The study covers a number of elements, (i) accuracy based on IQ of forum members, (ii) speed based on forum intellectual density, (iii) longevity based on forum cooperation and participation.
How quickly and how close we get to golden ratio will indicate the ability of this forum to reach collective cooperative knowledge sharing. By comparing our results with the results from another board, we can draw some interesting conclusions.
Its also for a bit of nonsense!

I think we also need a double or quad precision calculator to calculate our golden ratio. We are already beyond being able to calculate the ratio in Excel. Do you know of any high precision calculators?

You guys ought to write up a small program in VB, Delphi, or C/C++ to calc this for you...
(After all: It'd be able to do that up to 4 billion places or near to it, once you translate the equation from "human math" into "computer math")
EDIT PART - Just noticed you guys are past 4 billion, from a quick skim of the last page results... Well, so much for 4gb limit, right?
(Well, after that, you can use exponentiation/scientific notation iirc, to go past that - OR run it on a 64-bit rig + OS!)
:)
* Just a thought...

P.S.=> It's what computers are good for, after all, automating tasks like this one & more... apk

Alec... your post breaks the rules. You should post the next Fibonacci before you comment. :shadedshu
Excel is getting very close to running out of being able to calculate the next Fibonacci in the series. It has already run out of precision for calculating the Golden Ratio. So IF YOU ARE OFFERING to write a program that will calculate the next Fibonacci AND the corresponding Golden Ratio, we would be delighted :)
But I think you would be spending a lot of time looking for code to help you with the extremely high precision (unlimited precision) computation. It would be a very good exercise for you :) I would admire your coding skills if you were successful.

Yea, it probably does... my bad, I just read the title & posted, admittedly.
Sorry bout that fellas!
* Nope, I'm not going to write any programs for you, I was just offering something that might help you 'get into it' yourselves...
Now, I see you are using Excel though: smart move!
Except iirc, many versions of Excel are 16-bit limited/crippled, & doesn't HAVE TO BE!
I am talking full Excel, not student models.
(Not for EVERYTHING, but for instance, having only so many rows possible in its .xls sheets for example... that's how MS gets folks to buy are MORE POWERFUL TOOL, in Access, quite often - it makes companies buy the "premium/best" model of Office in fact!)
But I think you would be spending a lot of time looking for code to help you with the extremely high precision (unlimited precision) computation. It would be a very good exercise for you :) I would admire your coding skills if you were successful.
Ah, honestly? I don't have the time, or inclination... I used to do stuff like this on forums for programming students, but many times ended up doing their homework for them (not always, but most)...
I have a few folks here that have asked me stuff via PM about coding, & to look @ their code etc. but it's BEST to do it yourself...
However, I do & have give(n) clues on where I THINK the problem is, but often recommend them learning how to do step tracing & watch windows (for debugging - best thing you can learn is this, while coding, imo @ least).

Yes, RAM. First you got 1b, 2b, 4b, 8b, 16b, 32b, 64b, 128b, 256b, 512b, 1kb, 2kb, 4kb, 8kb, 16kb, 32kb, 64kb, 128kb, 256kb, 512kb, 1MB, 2MB, 4MB, 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and so on.
With RAM its more regular, but with something like the fibonacci.. you need hundreds of calculations until you get a repeating pattern. It will happen but like around one septilion or something.
EDIT: 4GB of ram = 4000,000,000bytes, eventually we will get as much as the value you stated.
