Until recently, if you wanted a Gmail (GoogleMail for us here in the UK) account, then you would either need to request a message sent to your mobile, or if your country wasn’t on the list for that service you would need to receive an invite from a current Gmail user. That’s all changed now – anyone anywhere in the world can now sign up for over 2GB of storage with Google for free in the same way that you might open a Hotmail or Yahoo email account. Although it may take a few hours, the service should go live immediately. Gmail remains a beta version, but it could soon be finished and become another powerful weapon in Google’s arsenal of free software and services. You should be able to sign up for the service by visting and clicking on "Sign up for Gmail" in the bottom right corner.

Arent you all slightly worried by the Ad Matching and the likes? They have machines trawling through all your emails do they not?

Personal information collected by Google may be stored and processed in the United States or any other country in which Google Inc. or its agents maintain facilities. By using Gmail, you consent to any such transfer of information outside of your country.

Google employees do not access the content of any mailboxes unless you specifically request them to do so (for example, if you are having technical difficulties accessing your account) or if required by law, to maintain our system, or to protect Google or the public.
That could mean they can read your emails for just about any reason...?

google has offered this free signing up for anyone for a while now. I created a gmail account 3 or 4 months ago without the old way of being invited, this is old news.

What, without a mobile? I know you've been able to create Google accounts for a while, but no email. This was even news on the official Google blog I think - maybe its new to some countries and not others.
