Well... heres a tale of ignorance and idiotic descisions. So like four days ago when I was modding my PC, moving some parts around, moving the X1950PRO to the bottom slot, I reconfigured the RAM. Then When I booted up the bios, i set it to display the splash screen. My head after school was so mucked up. I didnt realise for the past three days I was running on 512MB RAM!!! Then I disabled the antivirus and everything wasnt laggy.

I just realised when I ran 3D mark after disabling my anti virus... I was like

"holy s***, the ram exploded"

It read 498MB RAM. I used five programs to justify this. I then switched off the PC and found that the RAM was not even in the slot but held by the clips (somehow). Then I pushed it in....

I felt a rubbery feel on the heatspreader-

I figured it was karma from killing 300 people today.

I flicked the switch and turned on the PC...

...

...

Fans were whiiring...then it turned off 5 seconds later. I was like "***K" (said it out loud).
Then it sprang back to life.

I turned off the PC and tried again..

then I heard the beautiful beep of POST =D.

Its amazing that I survived on 512MB RAM.

my netbox here is on 512. it lags just running firefox and MSN at times *sigh*
oh and mafia, unless i'm mistaken, a 6300 is an allendale - so its not a conroe.

Ive done that before :)

My worst one was when i realised my comp was lagging really badly for like a month or so....i got sick and tired of it, so i did some mucking around and noticed the CPU was running t 1.3Ghz instead of 2.6Ghz, and HT was off (P4)

The only reason it took me a month was cus it was the family PC - not mine, and they were complaining so much that it was so slow :D

You are lagging

Allendale = E4300

Well the lag was insane until I got rid of Zone alarm. Then everything was nice. Tbh I was surprised that CS:S could run without stuttering on only 512MB RAM. But thing was I had less than 200MB page file.

EDIT: It was still insane after I had 1GB of ram.

TK, i played CS:S for like a year with 512mb of RAM and a 128mb FX5200 without lag ;)

512mb RAM isnt bad, its just that 1GB is heaps better. + When your comp goes from 1GB to 512mb it makes a bigger difference, cus all the programs and stuff still want 1GB

I know I was overexaggerating... I ran BF2 on max settings on my 500/250 9550 LOL. But BF2 is shit since it randomly stutters, even on quad core with 4GB PC10k RAM and 2x X2900XTX2s on 64 bit windows vista (since it runs better).

Isnt FX5200 pathetic tho?

yeah that was my point :D

FX5200 was the BIGGEST POS out :)

I could barely play BF2 with it....lucky CS:S has a great engine

Oh well, X800 in there now :)

my friend plays lot of games on 512mb fine, cs:s without lag, bf2 lags from time to time, c&c gennerals and zero hour need for speed carbon, and a couple more
without problems :)

it all comes down to your XP install... my gaming rig has 2GB DDR2, yet i make it use only 280MB ram at boot - the more free, the less lag :D

FX5200 = teh shitzors. Oh and try a defrag - every system i have with 2GB ram doesnt stutter at all, and teh 1GB's only stutter when the maps first load.

You are lagging

Allendale = E4300
Yes but isnt the 6300 only a 2MB cache? At least here in aus, E6600 is the lowest clocked 4MB cache available.

Allendales are processors that physically have 2mb on the die. Conroes on the other hand, have 4mb on the die. The thing that differentiates the 6300 and the 6400 from the Allendales and the E6600 processors and up is that the 6300 and the 6400 only have 2mb of the physical 4mb enabled. And because it actually has 4mb on the die, the 6300 and the 6400's are true Conroes.

Doesn't the E6400 have 4mb cache? If I'm not mistaken the E6300 is the only one with 2mb.

Nope. 6300 and 6400 both have 4mb on the die but only 2mb enabled (I know the 6400 only has 2 because I have it :D )
